🔐 Smart Door Locks & Family Safety: What Parents Should Know

Smart door locks can be convenient for busy families — no lost keys 🔑, easy access for kids 👧🧒, and remote locking from your phone 📱.
But like any connected technology, they come with risks. While no system is ever 100% secure, there are simple ways to reduce risk and protect your family’s safety and privacy.

If your home uses a smart door lock, keep these tips in mind ⬇️

🌐 Use a separate Wi-Fi network
If possible, keep your smart lock and other smart devices on a different network than phones, laptops, and tablets. This helps protect personal and financial information if a device is ever compromised.

📱 Secure the device that controls the lock
Use a strong password or biometric lock on the phone or tablet that controls your door lock. Avoid letting children use devices with full access to lock settings.

⚙️ Change default settings immediately
Always change default passwords, lock names, and Wi-Fi credentials. Default settings are the easiest for hackers to exploit.

🔄 Keep software up to date
Smart locks receive security updates for a reason. Turn on automatic updates and never ignore update reminders.

🔐 Use unique passwords
Avoid reusing passwords across apps. If one account is compromised, reused passwords can put your home at risk.

👥 Limit who has access
Only give access to people who truly need it. Remove access for babysitters, cleaners, or guests when it’s no longer required.

🗣️ Be cautious with voice control
If your lock works with voice assistants, change default activation phrases and consider disabling voice unlocking for added security.

🗝️ Have a backup plan
Keep a physical key and make sure kids know what to do if the lock fails due to low batteries, Wi-Fi issues, or power outages.
