More than 2,000 people get sick with Tuberculosis (TB) every year in Canada, and many more with TB infection are placed on preventive treatment.

Today we aim to raise awareness about the devastating health, social and economic impacts of this infectious disease, and how we can advocate for improved TB care and access to TB medicines.

Today, in honour of Purple Day, UHN's Epilepsy Department at Krembil Brain Institute took over the atrium of Toronto Western Hospital to showcase valuable research and raise awareness about epilepsy. đź’ś

Purple Day recognizes the 1-in-100 people living with epilepsy, characterized by recurring seizures, ranging from mild to severe, that can significantly impact a person's daily life. Despite its prevalence, epilepsy is largely misunderstood, and many people with the condition face discrimination.

Join us in starting up the conversation about this disorder, raising awareness and ending the stigma!

March is !

Introducing myPlate, an initiative that gives patients like Barb Richardson the opportunity to choose their meals with the help of a dietary aide. The initiative is part of a larger phased plan to improve food and service for in-patients across multiple UHN sites, promote food consumption and reduce overall food waste.

"It's so nice to see her familiar face everyday," Barb says of her dietary aide, Madhvi. "When I need to figure out what I'm going to have for lunch, she'll rhyme off all of the things I really like because she knows. I can't compliment her enough."

It’s Dental Assistants Recognition Week! Let’s celebrate the incredible dental assistants at UHN, who play a crucial role in patient care, from oncology to rehabilitation.

“What I love about being a dental assistant is serving patients and supporting them through their treatment journey. As dental assistants, we are a patient's first contact with the dental clinic. We introduce ourselves and make them feel comfortable and relaxed before they see the dentist.” – Celia Filipe, Preventative Dental Assistant at UHN.

A heartfelt thank you to Celia and all of the dental assistants across UHN for your unwavering dedication and contributions!

Staff volunteers also lead a tour of the lab, showcasing the type of work they do and the clinical applications of 3D printing.

In recognition of Black History Month, the UHN Black Legacy Committee (BLC) led their fourth installment of The Colour of Proper Care series, an initiative designed to create a supportive and inclusive environment while fostering education and self-advocacy.

This year’s event explored the intersection of disability and race. Dr. Onye Nnorom, a Family Physician and Public Health Specialist, and Dr. Liza Arnason, Founder of the Ase Community Foundation for Black Canadians with Disabilities, led the discussion, shedding light on anti-Black racism and ableism in health care.

Thank you to the panelists and BLC members who worked collaboratively to organize and deliver a powerful, thought-provoking experience. Their collective effort continues to foster meaningful progress, making UHN an increasingly inclusive and equitable environment for work and healing.

We're celebrating Resident Doctor Appreciation Week! Join us in recognizing and honoring the exceptional resident doctors at UHN, who diligently work to provide the highest quality of care for our patients.

“What makes me excited about work are the trainees, residents and medical students. Learning all these new concepts, learning how to navigate the wards and clinical medicine in general can be very intimidating. If I'm able to support some of the trainees through that journey – it's very meaningful.” - Dr. David Bobrowski, Chief Medical Resident of Internal Medicine at UHN’s Toronto General Hospital.

Thank you to Dr. Bobrowski and to all of the incredibly hardworking resident doctors across UHN!

Having fun can be therapeutic!

February is . Recreation Therapists, like Ksenia Melamed at UHN's West Park Healthcare Centre, support patients in discovering - or rediscovering - meaning, joy, and well-being through leisure and recreation.

"Recreation Therapy can have a profound impact on the patients' overall health and wellbeing. It helps people to boost their emotional and spiritual health, build and strengthen social connections, find new hobbies or adaptive ways to get back to existing ones, and maintain their sense of self and identity through individualized leisure care plans."

Thank you to Ksenia and to the Recreational Therapists and Patient Wellness Partners across for their essential work in the patient care journey!

DCD – donation after circulatory death – transplant involves a donor whose heart has stopped beating. Today, innovative ex vivo organ perfusion technology can revive hearts outside of the body, restoring blood flow and oxygen. The method was first advanced at UHN for lung transplants and is now helping expand the pool of donor hearts

Dr. Seyed Alireza Rabi, part of the multidisciplinary team at UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Ajmera Transplant Centre UHN, estimates that DCD could yield 30 per cent more hearts for transplantation, dramatically enhancing the lives of those living with heart failure in Canada.
