Ride 4 Williams Syndrome - R4WS -

Ride 4 Williams Syndrome - R4WS - The RIDE FOR CHRISTIAN was a cycling event held as a tribute to individuals living with WS. Thanks! But there are major struggles as well.

The RIDE FOR CHRISTIAN is an annual cycling event being held as a tribute to individuals living with the genetic condition, Williams Syndrome. Williams Syndrome is a genetic condition present at birth, which affects individuals simply by chance. Despite medical hardships and intellectual challenges, people with Williams embrace life and everyone around them, with unconditional love and complete acceptance. It is characterized by several medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning disabilities. However, these issues often occur side by side with striking verbal abilities, highly social personalities and a strong affinity for music. Williams Syndrome affects 1 in 10,000 people worldwide – an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people in the United States. It is known to occur in every culture, as well as equally in males and females. Children with Williams Syndrome are known for being social, friendly and endearing. Parents often say the joy and perspective a child with Williams Syndrome brings into their lives has been unimaginable. The majority of individuals with Williams Syndrome have some type of heart or blood vessel problem. They typically develop hypercalcemia, dental abnormalities, musculoskeletal problems and/or kidney abnormalities. As a result, children with Williams Syndrome need costly and ongoing medical care. Early intervention programs (such as speech or occupational therapy) are instrumental in determining one’s success. The RIDE FOR CHRISTIAN was established to raise awareness about Williams Syndrome. All money raised from the 2014 RIDE FOR CHRISTIAN will go towards genetic research through the SickKids Foundation. Together, we can build a better future for children and adults with Williams Syndrome.

To Whom It May Concern:

SickKids Foundation is extremely pleased to recommend to you an exciting opportunity to support The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) through the R4WS – Ride 4 Williams Syndrome (formerly known as Ride for Christian – Williams Syndrome) event which is a community fundraiser that supports the Williams Syndrome Research Fund and the work of Dr. Ronald Cohn, Chief of Genetics at The Hospital for Sick Children.

This year’s event will be held on July 30, 2017.

The Ride for Christian started in 2014 as the first-ever cycling event held as a tribute to individuals living with the genetic condition, Williams Syndrome and to date, the ride has raised $50,000 for the hospital.

Because of the support SickKids receives from this event and other initiatives like it, important advances have been made in child health research, new life-saving medical equipment has been purchased for our clinics and operating rooms, and our young patients continue to receive the best care that science, technology, and compassion have to offer – here in Canada and around the world.

In order to ensure success, the organizers of R4WS – Ride 4 Williams Syndrome require support from companies, organizations, and individuals who share their vision and hope for improved child health. It is my hope that you will consider supporting this initiative.

Your commitment will not only ensure that this event is a fundraising success, it will also make a real difference in the lives of children today and for generations to come.

If you are able to lend your support to this event, please accept our deepest gratitude. Please note this letter is valid for one year from the date issued. Should you have any questions, please contact me at (416) 813-6166 x 2234.

Hello Everyone ,

Christian is in Grade 2 this year and in his 3rd year at school with a measurable IEP .

However , we have been informed he will no longer receive a F/T Teaching Assistant in class , it's been reduced to half day .

Has anyone been faced with this challenge and please share and send all thoughts and advice to support his claim for a F/T Teaching Assistant .

Thanks
Roger
