TDA Global Cycling

TDA Global Cycling Not your typical cycling tour company. Adventures for everyone. From 2 weeks to 5.5 months. Routes in over 80 countries on 6 continents.

TDA Global Cycling* was conceived in the late 1980’s when Henry Gold, the company’s Founder and Director, was managing an international NGO that delivered humanitarian assistance to disadvantaged communities in Ethiopia and other African countries. His original concept was to produce inexpensive, rugged mountain bikes in Africa, for Africans, as a low cost solution to local transportation needs, and to market this new bicycle by organizing a cycling race across the continent – the Tour d’Afrique. While the mountain bike project did not take off, the pioneering vision of the Tour d’Afrique proved irresistible. In early 2002 Henry and Michael de Jong began the preparations in earnest, undaunted by enormous skepticism and the mountain of logistical challenges to be overcome, and, on January 15, 2003, thirty-three cyclists saddled up at the Pyramids at Giza and started pedaling south. Four months later, with Table Mountain and Cape Town in sight, they celebrated the realization of their dream and the establishment of the Guinness World Record for the fastest human powered crossing of Africa. Since then our unique little company has grown, in leaps and bounds, through many trials and tribulations. Following in its spirit, several more long distance cycling expeditions have been undertaken. In 2015 we became TDA Global Cycling, a new name that reflects our growing portfolio of adventure cycling tours.

All told more than 1,200 intrepid souls have now completed one of our epic trans-continental rides. Through our Foundation, and the donations of many of our clients, more than 2,500 bicycles have been distributed to health care and community development workers in Africa and India. In short it has been one helluva ride. But we still have a long ways to go. There are so many more fascinating lands and hidden corners of this beautiful planet to discover, and we hope that you will be there with us when we do!

"Each day brought us a different taste of the island, and by this I don’t mean food, though there is plenty of that to sample as well. Every day we witnessed the lushness, the natural richness, the fauna and flora that was all around us. Every day, each and every one us had the opportunity for a random encounter with a local who would bring a smile to our faces."

The inaugural Tea Route Cycling Tour, crossing Southern India and circumnavigating Sri Lanka has finished. A few days ago we arrived on the outskirts of the Sri Lanka's capital city, Colombo, and began to celebrate our adventure. To many of us, because the island is situated so close to India

We made it! Our first ever trip on the Tea Route run by TDA Global Cycling was a grand success!

We rode through paddy fields, tea estates, coastal roads, lovely hill stations, and country villages. We braved heat, humidity, rain, and endured the challenges, covering thousands of KMS across countries and coasts.

Along the way, we forged lifelong friendships and shared unforgettable camaraderie as a team! 🌿🇮🇳🇱🇰🚴🚴‍♀️📸

A remote back-country boat ride. Some seminal Vietnamese history. A charming hill station. Shimmering rice terraces. Ancient walled cities. Remarkable pagodas. Stunning gorges. What else will you see along the Road to Shangri-La?

The road to The Road to Shangri-La, like the tour itself, has been full of unexpected twists and turns. Conceived in 2018, scouted in 2019 and planned for 2021, it was, like the rest of us, blindsided by the pandemic. Even once COVID started to loosen its grip on the world, China maintained a very s

Our riders took a lunch break in a random Sri Lankan village 🇱🇰 and couldn't resist joining a quick cricket match with the local kids. With the Cricket World Cup happening in Sri Lanka at the time, the excitement was infectious - those kids were thrilled to play with our riders!

Riding through Maasai land feels less like passing through a place and more like entering a living frame of a film.
On Tour d’Afrique, the road slows you down enough to notice faces. The red shúkà, beaded necklaces, children who run beside the bikes, laughing and curious, not as subjects but as hosts of a land that carries memory in its soil.
There’s something cinematic about it. The bicycle becomes a tracking shot. The horizon is your wide angle. And every encounter is a close-up. Eyes, gestures, silence.
Culturally, it’s a reminder that mobility means different things. For us, movement is adventure. For the Maasai, movement has long been tradition. Pastoral rhythms shaped by cattle, seasons, and land. You feel that continuity as you ride through it.
Tour d’Afrique isn’t just distance and elevation. Sometimes it’s about crossing invisible lines. From observer to participant, from tourist to guest, even if just for a moment on the roadside.

During our Tea route tour in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰, we had the opportunity to visit a tea factory and gain insight into the tea-making process, followed by a delightful tea tasting session. It was a productive and enriching experience for our riders learning about the various stages involved in processing tea leaves and sampling the delicious varieties produced by the factory.

Stay tuned for more updates on the tea route as we head to the final week of the tour at Srilanka 🇱🇰
