Toronto Psychoanalytic Society & Institute The Toronto Institute of Psychoanalysis (TIP) is composed of senior members of the TPS who have, in addition, qualified as Training & Supervising Analysts.

Toronto Psychoanalytic Society (TPS) is a not-for-profit association of professional psychoanalysts engaged in the development and advancement of clinical psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic thought in Toronto. The Toronto Psychoanalytic Society (TPS) is an association of psychoanalysts who through having completed their training have qualified for membership in the TPS, CPS and IPA. They are charged with the responsibility of analyzing and supervising candidates in training. They also oversee the processes of admission of candidates, the assessment of their progress in training, the development and administration of the curriculum, the evaluation of members of the TPS who have applied to become training analysts, among other functions. The TIP was established in 1969 as a branch of the Canadian Institute of Psychoanalysis (CIP). The TIP is now the largest psychoanalytic training program in Canada. As a component society of the IPA and a branch of the CIP, the TIP provides the only training in clinical psychoanalysis in Toronto with internationally recognized standards of excellence and ethics.

This insightful and innovative book sheds light on the complexity of the concept of guilt, while exploring aspects of guilt that have previously been overlooked in psychoanalytic theory and discourse.
Offering original insights on the topic, Donald Carveth looks at Freud’s failure to distinguish persecutory guilt from reparative guilt, and the superego from the conscience. The significance of these distinctions for both psychosocial theory and clinical practice is explored throughout the volume. Carveth distinguishes varieties of punitive guilt, such as justified, unjustified, “borrowed” or induced, existential and collective. He expertly describes patterns of self-punishment and self-sabotage, while also addressing the widespread use of persecutory guilt and self-punishment as a defence against and evasion of reparative guilt, contrition, and reparation. Throughout the volume, Carveth critically reviews a range of recent contributions to psychoanalytic literature to support his theories. Participants should obtain a copy of the book.

Participants will be encouraged to think reflectively about the development of the infant / young child.
Participants will think about and reflect upon the experience of the infant / young child in relationship with a primary caregiver, how a secure attachment is achieved, and what can disrupt security.
Participants will be presented with classical concepts from Freud, Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott. The research of Beatrice Beebe will be explored.
