After an improvised ride that took us along neighbourhood streets we hadn’t visited before, we stopped at a popular local games store and cafe. It was easy to see the appeal aside from tasty drinks: the energy and community were palpable and engaging as people connected over a shared passion.

There was a time when I’d pick a drama over a reality show any day. Well, times have changed. Engaging dramas aren’t always easy to find, and there are some good reality shows out there. One example: Help! We Bought a Village. At first glance, it’s about Brits—couples and a few individuals—who want to get into the property market by buying abandoned and decaying French villages. Big challenge, non? But the couples underscore the team in teamwork and the soul in soulmates as they work together to make their dreams come true with hard work, commitment, communication, vision, respect and more.

My mom’s the singer in the family. She has sung in her church choir and at weddings and funeral.

Me, I’ve always loved singing along to my favourite songs when there’s no one around. But I’ve had the itch to go bigger and earlier this year, joined a group.

We recently learned Una McCann’s uplifting “I Believe,” which is catchy and includes this powerful line: “We were born to love.”

Our group has sung it in rounds, but hearing it in this flash mob took it to a whole new level and underscored once again the power of community and the joy of sharing your voice. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zyOK5xyy6FE

Enjoy!

It looks like I’m not the only one with courage on my mind. Last Thursday, I received day 4 of Michael Bungay-Stanier’s email series, A Week of Living Brilliantly.

His guest Ruben Chavez, a podcaster, shared this insight: “Every meaningful thing in life comes with a dose of discomfort. Building a family. Building a business. Building a new version of yourself….Use your discomfort as an opportunity to practice courage. ”

In response, Michael defined courage in this way: “Courage isn’t about eliminating fear. It’s about rehearsing how you meet it.”

Ready to see your courage in a new light?

Today’s post is brought to you by the weather. I have to admit that the grey skies and rain these past few days have been less than inspiring. Urmas echoed my sentiments when I asked him about his day—and although he too wasn’t feeling it, his day was also productive. My response was to cheer him on for what he achieved and remind him (and myself) that all you can do is keep putting one foot in front of the other. Advice that we’ve all heard or taken at one time or another. It helps to know you’re not alone and that you have a cheering section.

In what was our longest ride so far, we rode along the Waterfront Trail in the west end of Toronto to the east. Here we are at our final pitstop—Cherry Beach. But the point isn’t about our destination but rather the journey and taking the time (as we did) to enjoy the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and the experiences along the way. That’s what made it magical. What do you tend to be more focused on?

Today, Urmas and I rode through the University of Toronto Mississauga campus where I spent a year studying before heading to the downtown campus. Not surprisingly some things had changed. It was great to see it through fresh eyes and discover gems I hadn’t even been aware of at the time like Nature’s Trail, which was an adventure in itself. This underscored a lesson I learned during the week while my cousin was visiting from NYC. All it takes is one person to help you see your world through fresh eyes. Photo by Rosy Kumar.
