Critical Social Work: Taking Theory to the Streets

Critical Social Work: Taking Theory to the Streets This page includes the work of students from SOWK2030 Critical Perspectives on Society.

Undergraduate students from the York School of Social Work took theory to the streets to challenge, inspire, inform and transform oppressive social relations by creating pages, movies, blogs, plays and carrying out acts of guerilla activism Students were asked to select a social problem, examine how social work agencies or related organizations have responded to the problem, use social theory to deconstruct how the social problem and target population was constructed and then construct their own creative response that embodied a critical social work perspective. To give the assignment more zing, students were challenged to take their response outside the classroom walls and to make a real impact. Students took this challenge up enthusiastically, as you can see on this site. They tackled issues including sexual assault, poverty, eating disorders, food insecurity, the stigma of teen pregnancy, homelessness, compassion based universities, Aboriginal treaty rights, disability and accessibility, and so on.
