There is still time to plant and reap the rewards of your garden.

August is an ideal time to plant a diverse range of vegetables. Ontario gardeners can plant cool season crops like, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chinese cabbage, collard greens, kale, leeks, lettuce, mustard greens, radishes, spinach, Swiss chard, turnips, and winter squash. Peas can also be sown directly in mid-August. These choices will yield abundant fall harvests. Happy planting, Enjoy!

The Importance of Omega-3 during Pregnancy, Breastfeeding and Infancy.

Omega-3 and Vitamin D are crucial for fetal and infant development. Omega-3 fatty acids prevent premature deliveries and improve baby’s intelligence. Since our bodies can't produce Omega-3, a mother’s diet must be rich in properly balanced Omega-3. DHA, vital for the central nervous system, is especially important in the last trimester and the first three months after birth. Adequate Omega-3 and Vitamin D during pregnancy support the development of the baby's central nervous system, brain, and cardiovascular function, as well as cognitive ability and vision. Deficiencies in Omega-3 and/or Vitamin D may be linked to SIDS, autism, and ADD/ADHD.

Omega-3 fatty acids, like those in Auum supplements, can go bad if exposed to heat and light, so it's best to keep them in a cool, dark place; the fridge is ideal. Taking omega-3s with food is generally recommended for better absorption, but there's no need to avoid them during the summer months.

Stroke, often referred to as a brain attack, is the third leading cause of death in the country. It results in the death of vital nerve cells by cutting off oxygen to the brain. There are two types: ischemic stroke, where blood flow is blocked, similar to heart attacks, accounting for two-thirds of all strokes; and hemorrhagic stroke, where a burst artery, often due to high blood pressure, deprives nerve cells of oxygen.

Reducing high blood pressure is key to preventing hemorrhagic strokes. Omega-3 fatty acids in marine oil can lower blood pressure and reduce blood clot formation. Dutch research indicates even small weekly servings of fish can reduce stroke risk due to the anti-coagulant properties of marine oils.
