Tajikeimɨk - Mi'kmaw Health and Wellness

Tajikeimɨk - Mi'kmaw Health and Wellness Tajikeimɨk is the new and developing health and wellness organization leading health transformation for Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia.

Elukuti'kw wjit naji-wlo'ltinenew utanminal. (We are working toward better health for all in our communities.) Health transformation is the process of the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia taking control of the design and delivery of their health and wellness services to improve overall health for individuals and communities. Over this multi-year journey, the health transformation process will build on, grow and evolve the health and wellness services and programs used by Mi’kmaw people in Nova Scotia, with a focus on high-quality, culturally safe and wholistic approaches. The Chiefs and Health Directors from the 13 First Nations in Nova Scotia have long been working in their communities, and with Mi’kmaw organizations, to address gaps in health services and improve wellness. This work has created a strong foundation to build health transformation. We at Tajikeimɨk are committed to maintaining a respectful and inclusive community. Rude, inappropriate, or disrespectful comments will be removed, and users may be blocked. Examples of unacceptable behaviour include:

• Offensive language or hate speech
• Personal attacks or harassment
• Discriminatory remarks (racism, sexism, etc.)
• Trolling or inflammatory comments

Let’s ensure this space remains respectful and welcoming for everyone.

Our Mental Wellness and Healing team are sharing these reminders to take care of your “elf” this holiday season 🎄

🎁 It’s okay to say no without guilt.
🎁 Your wellbeing matters—protect your energy, step back, or delegate when needed.
🎁 You are not responsible for managing everyone else’s emotions.
🎁 Rest is not something you have to earn. You are allowed to take it.
🎁 It’s okay to decline events or gatherings that feel draining or overwhelming.
🎁 Giving is about intention and care; not how much money is spent.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or need a little extra support, help is available.

We are pleased to welcome Serena Lewis to the Tajikeimɨk team as our new Healing Through Loss Lead.

The Healing Through Loss Lead will lead the creation, implementation, and evaluation of a culturally grounded framework to support Mi’kmaw individuals, families, and communities in navigating grief and loss. Rooted in Mi’kmaw ways of knowing and being, this role will work in close collaboration with Elders, knowledge keepers, and community members to ensure that all tools, programs, and services reflect the spiritual, emotional, and cultural needs of Mi’kmaw people.

A message from Serena:

We are delighted to welcome Abigail Binns to our team in the role of Mental Wellness and Healing Administrative Assistant.

The Mental Wellness and Healing Administrative Assistant supports the team by coordinating schedules, organizing meetings and events, managing daily administrative tasks, and assisting in building strong relationships across the L’nu’k Mental Wellness and Healing Framework.

Here is a note from Abigail:

“Kwe’, Teluisi Abigail Binns!

I am excited to join Tajikeimɨk as a Mental Wellness and Healing Administrative Assistant. I graduated from Mount St. Vincent University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.

During my time at university, I was a student-athlete, playing soccer for five years and serving as captain in my final year. This experience instilled in me the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically. Growing up, I spent time fishing, hunting, and trapping with my dad, which deepened my appreciation for nature at a young age. Additionally, I spent five years working alongside a member of the legislative assembly, gaining valuable experience that I look forward to bringing to Tajikeimɨk.

I am thrilled to bring my passion and skills to this role and contribute to the work at Tajikeimɨk.”

Please join us in welcoming Abigail!
