đżâ¨ Sunday Reminder for All the Mamas â¨đż
Your energy is precious. Your time, your love, your careâitâs all expensive. Think of it like a luxury item: not everyone has invested enough in you to deserve it, and thatâs okay. đ
Motherhood already asks so much of us our hearts, our energy, our patience. Thatâs why itâs so important to choose your community carefully. Surround yourself with people who value your worth, who pour back into you, and who make you feel safe, seen, and supported.
Not everyone can afford your energy⌠and not everyone is meant to. đ¸
This Sunday, give yourself permission to protect your peace, nurture your spirit, and lean into the people who fill your cup back up. đŤś

Truth-Telling is Not Always Comfortable, But Itâs Necessary.
Growing up, summer often meant crab fishing with my dad and watching Canada Day fireworks. As a kid, those moments felt simple and celebratory. But other summers looked different. I remember aunties who were angry, voices tense, energy heavy. Instead of fireworks, weâd gather at the Smithers Friendship Centre for Indigenous-led events filled with ceremony and culture. I didnât always understand why only that we were choosing something different, something that felt confusing.
As I got older, I began to understand.
Being both Southeast Asian and Indigenous hasnât always come with clear belonging. Iâve been told Iâm ânot Asian enough,â and Iâve been pushed to dull my Indigeneity to fit in. And still, I am both. Fully. Fiercely. Uncomfortably for a younger me. And that blend shapes how I move through the world especially on days like today.
To be honest, attending Canada Day events can feel uncomfortable. I hear the frustration and pain of other Indigenous people who refuse to celebrate a country built on stolen land, broken treaties, and attempted erasure. I carry that truth too. But I also carry hope.
Iâm not here for the old version of Canada the one that forgets or hides. Iâm here for the Canada thatâs restoring, reckoning, and rebuilding with continue to acknowledgment the truth of Indigenous elders of the past and continued racism today. The one thatâs capable of new, shared histories. The one where Indigenous voices are not only heard but centered. The one where being both is no longer a question, but an honour.
And that kind of Canada isnât created through silence. Itâs built by those of us willing to speak up. To stand in the discomfort. To tell the truth. Our truths even when they donât fit the narrative.
So today, I walk with that complexity. I walk with memory of my dad and my grandmother who raised me. And I walk forwardânever hiding, never erasingâbecause healing only happens when we show up whole.

Vancouver, BC â May 10, 2025 â The first Indigenous women-led pop-up shop is opening its doors in the heart of downtown Vancouver. TIDAL: Turtle Island Design and Lifestyle is a collaboration between four Indigenous women owned businesses: West Coast Wildflowers, by Alissa Assu, Copper Canoe Woman, founded by Vina Brown, Sriracha Revolver Hot Sauce by Jordan Hocking and Hawk Lace by Sade Makerra Auger.
Opened June 2nd, just in time to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Month, TIDAL brings together Indigenous excellence in business, body care, food, and fashion. Located in The Shops at Bentall Centre at 202- 555 Burred Street, as part of its retail pop-up program, this unique retail space showcases a powerful celebration of Indigenous culture, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
TIDAL will be open Monday to Friday 10:00am-4:00pm at Unit 202, The Shops at Bentall Centre, 555 Burrard Street.
All four founders are proud participants in the Indigenous Digital Accelerator Program (IDA) at Capilano University, which supports early-stage Indigenous businesses in the digital, cultural, and tech sectors. Led by Doreen Manuel, Director of the Bosa Centre for Film & Animation & Inclusive Community Projects, the IDA fosters growth rooted in community, culture, and environmental sustainability.
âThis space is more than just a store â itâs a movement rooted in authentic Indigenous storytelling and economic self-determination. Every product in our collective is Indigenous-owned, designed, and made right here in Canada. This isnât about mass-produced designs manufactured overseas â itâs about genuine cultural expression crafted by our hands, not just our names. By supporting TIDAL, youâre helping keep financial resources circulating within our local economy, strengthening our communities and preserving our cultural integrity through commerce.â says Alissa Assu, owner of West Coast Wildflowers, Bear Essential Oils, and RavenSong Soap & Candle. âTIDAL is about lifting Indigenous women, our creativity, and our commitment to community and land stewardship.â
The four Indigenous founders represent diverse nations and heritages:

A little about meâŚ
My name is Alissa; I am from the Wetâsuwetâen First Nation and second generation born immigrant. However, I call home among the unceded traditional territory of the LigwiĹda'xw people; the We Wai Kai, Wei Wai K*m and Kwiakah First Nations people in Campbell River, British Columbia. I am happily married; with one son named Ember and a special dog named Bow-the-third. My passions include badminton, hiking, and advocating for living organ donation, registering to become an organ donor, supporting youth in sport, shopping local and low-waste living.
Certainly, we are living in delicate times. Were in this together â as we navigate new grounds under the global pandemic of COVID-19. During this time, my family had time to reflect about âthe new normalâ and the impact of COVID-19 had on our family, friends and community. I became inspired to open a small shop because of the many progressive women in business that surrounded me. As a result, the vision of Wildflowers & Co. became alive.
Wildflowers & Co. will always strive to support local. If you are a small business owners and interested in having your products in-store please contact thewestcoast.wildflowers@gmail.com!
