“How was your follow up with the neurologist? What did they recommend?”

I’ve asked this question many times, and often my clients with a brain injury have difficulty recalling the details of their appointment. This may result in misinformation or poor adherence to recommendations. This is an easy compensatory strategy to not only help with recall, but also to promote understanding.

Many people don’t know that speech-language pathologists are not only experts in communication, but also in swallow impairments.

Some signs of a swallow impairment may include:
- Coughing/throat clearing during or after meals
- Wet/gurgly voice
- Recurring respiratory infections (pneumonia)
- Feeling like food won’t go down
- Unintentional weight loss/malnutrition
