Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with helping people find energy.

I think at our cores, that’s what we all want, right? To feel like we are vital enough, capable enough to live a vibrant life and follow our dreams…

I often like to ask people from the get go “what would you do if you had more energy” and it’s a privilege to get to see what unfolds for people as they start to feel good again.

This is just a little snippet of my process. Sometimes it’s a simple as this, and sometimes it’s more complex. But I’m always up for the challenge because your energy energizes me!

We are big fans of kiddos here at The Meadow Clinic!

As we head into the tail end August, I know many of you out there are gearing up for the new school year and thinking about how to set your family up for success. We want to be a part of that!

Our counsellor, Nikki, has years of experience working with children and teens and is comfortable with the wide range of difficulties that can come up during childhood and adolescence. She often brings elements of play into her practice, ensuring she is meeting any kid at an appropriate level for their needs.

Dr. Haavaldsen, one of our clinics naturopathic doctors is also passionate about children and teen health. Whether it is concerns about immune health, making sure their nutrition supports their active lifestyle, digestive health, or anything in between - she’s got you!

Going through a tough time with your ride or die?

Relationships can be tough. As individuals, we all have our own experiences that shape our thoughts and beliefs and behaviours. When two people come together it can be difficult to reconcile those differences even in the most loving of relationships.

We have a *very* exciting announcement.

The Meadow Clinic is so happy to share with you that we now have a team of mental health professionals to support you!

We want to introduce to you Nikki Tiller! Nikki is a registered social worker who also recently completed her Master’s in Counselling.

She has a decade of experience in the mental health field working with adults and children alike. She understands that healing requires trust and she strives to create a space where individuals can explore their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgement.

Nikki is now taking on clients on Thursday evenings, with more availability coming soon.

Did you know at The Meadow Clinic we have a fully stocked dispensary of professional grade supplements?

Professional grade supplements means there is a guarantee around quality (i.e. no Amazon counterfeits) and product integrity. In addition, professional grade supplements may have ingredients or dosing that is not available to the general public.

The naturopathic doctors at The Meadow Clinic will use supplements as part of a comprehensive plan. Some things to know about this:

This week was Naturopathic Medicine Week AND - I am also am celebrating that I have been in practice for 5 years! 🎂 🖐️ 👩‍⚕️

Five years doesn’t sound like a very long time, but I can honestly tell you I have transformed *so* much as a practitioner over the last few years.

I feel so much more confident in myself as a naturopathic doctor than I used to, and I feel so much pride in the space I am currently creating at The Meadow Clinic. And yet, I am aware I have so much to learn, so much growing yet to do. But, I feel like I am growing into the person I am meant to be.

This profession has given so much to me and I am so grateful I found it. I am also SO grateful to every patient who has ever allowed me to walk with them in any capacity. I am always humbled by this.

All this sappy post is to say:

Here’s the thing…you’re allowed to be busy. In a time where we know stress negatively impacts our health, we can feel like we’re drowning in messaging that suggests we all need to just slooow down, do less, be less busy. Which, probably true.

But, you don’t need to feel guilty about being busy.

If you’re pursuing something in life like motherhood or a career or relationships or personal goals (or maybe all those frickin things at once!!) then - you’re gunna get busy.

You do need to stop sometimes though. At some point in your day, you need to get back into your body, be present and let your nervous system recalibrate. If you just go from day to day never taking a break from the business, it does catch up.

I love a bedtime ritual for this reason. Phone away. Tea made. A shower or a bath. Some music. Chill out.

Got hormone problems? If you turn to our friend Google or TikTok, the solution is pretty clear, right? Just avoid gluten and dairy and everything will get better! Heck, just avoid carbs altogether while you’re at it, right? Maybe not. Don’t get me wrong, there is a time and place for elimination (or, reduction) of certain foods in the diet but blindly cutting out large food groups without a deeper understanding of your nutrition can absolutely do harm in the long run. Here is a couple reasons why:

1. In the research, both calcium deficiency and diets lower in complex carbohydrates are associated with worsening of PMS and hormonal symptoms. Restrictive diets put you at risk for both of these.

2. You may inadvertently be under consuming food or carbs. This is especially relevant if you are an athlete or highly active. Under-consuming actually impairs the communication between your brain and ovaries, which can exacerbate/create hormonal issues.

My takeaway message is that dietary changes can be profoundly helpful, but learning more about what foods to include will go much further than just following “rules” out of fear. If you feel like you need help, I love working on this with my patients.

I am not an elite athlete.

I’ve always been active and played sports (soccer❤️). It wasn’t uncommon for me to spend several hours a week being active in different ways.

But I wasn’t competing at high levels or training for big competitions.

And so, I made the mistake of thinking that I couldn’t have much impact on my health or performance with my nutrition. I didn’t think I was good enough for it to matter. I was wrong. When I implemented some evidence based changes to my regime I ended up with more energy, less headaches and better recovery. And I got better at my sports!

Don’t make the same mistake as me!

Do you…

Go on hour long runs, or run multiple days/week?
Rip on your mountain bike for 2 hours at a time?
Go on all day back country ski trips?
Dream of doing a triathlon?
Play a team sport?
Head to spin classes a few times/week?

You’d probably benefit from learning a thing or two about fuelling for your activity. Don’t sell yourself short like I did.

In my practice I am very up front that I have a strict late cancellation/no-show policy. I make this clear in my bookings and intake forms. This is in place in order to protect my livelihood and to provide better care for patients who are waiting to get in. If you cancel late or don’t show, we can’t fill your spot, and we are left unable to work for that time.

But this post honestly isn’t about that. This post is about boundaries and how we react when someone upholds a boundary with us.

The term “setting boundaries” is talked about so often these days, but I think there are nuances to this concept that we don’t talk about as much.

How do you react when someone upholds a boundary with you?

It sucks to be held accountable sometimes, especially when there is a financial cost to it. I’ve been there. It might be our first instinct to take that discomfort and try to hurl it back at the person holding us accountable. Maybe that looks like yelling at them, threatening them or their reputation.

What would it be like to sit with that discomfort instead? To honour that someone has communicated a boundary to you, you’ve agreed to it, but then you didn’t hold up your end? Are you willing to be vulnerable enough to say “yeah, I did that, I will own up to it” instead of trying to throw those uncomfortable feelings at everyone else?

It takes a deeper level of emotional security to do this. How do you behave when someone enforces a boundary with you?
