Happy Monday everyone!

With some kids going back to school in-person , some of the worries they may have had before may be surfacing up again.

Here are some wonderful resources to help your kids during this time:

1. This a great book to help explain the virus to kids:https://nosycrow.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Coronavirus_INSwith-cover.pdf

2. Another great book to help kids understand our situaiton:https://globalhealth.emory.edu/_includes/documents/sections/programs/covid-19_helpers_bacon_lee_eghi.pdf

3. This is a read aloud book called 'I am Peace' which helps kids with recognizing the racing thoughts in their minds and what they can do to be in the here and now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXA3837uv3w

4. 'Sitting still like a frog' is one of my favourite self-guided mindfulness exercises for kids. You can find them for free here: https://www.shambhala.com/sittingstilllikeafrog/

5. Another book about COVID that is inspired by Dr. Seuss:https://globalhealth.emory.edu/_includes/documents/sections/ebook-competition/what-color-is-today.pdf

Feel free to reach out if you need more resources or supports during this time.

"Welcome to Holland" is a wonderful poem that provides a great explanation of how parents of children with disabilities feel. When expecting a child, all parents are hoping for a healthy baby - that is all they want. Losing that dream of having a healthy baby is something that parents grieve. The child that they get is not something that they expected - its not a good or a bad thing - its just different. They love this child and accept them for who they are and still grieve over their lost dream of a healthy baby.

When we think of a disability, we often think of something we can see - a physical disability, Down's Syndrome, a non-verbal child. However, a disability can also be invisible - such as ADHD or High Functioning Autism. I have a strong passion for helping and working with parents and children with ADHD. Understanding the disorder and providing the appropriate treatment makes a world of difference in the lives of the families that I work with.

Be compassionate to everyone you meet as you don't what battles they are fighting.

We live in a result oriented world where we want to see fast results. With therapy, change happens over time and you may not notice a huge transformation happening right away. It’s like a seed that you plant- little by little you grow and change and one day you look back at yourself and see just how much you have grown and changed.

People with ADHD are much more than their labels.

Raise your hand if your child can tell you exactly what they need to do when they feel angry, sad, or worried but doesn’t do it at the moment?

If a child knows the step by step process of what to do, why don’t they use it??

It’s because kids learn about how to manage emotions when they are feeling them!

It’s not only kids, adults too learn how to manage various situation and use new techniques when they are in the midst of feeling the emotion.

Next time your child has a tantrum, use it as a teaching opportunity to teach him/her how to manage that emotion. The more practice your child will have with using the tools, the better and more natural they will become at it!

Feel free to write to me with any questions about it.

If you want to read more about this concept, you can search : Russell Barkley - point of performance and John Gottman - state dependent learning.

With couples spending more time together now than they ever did before, a lot of relationships are taking a hit. A Tokyo firm came up with a possible solution to give couples a break from the mounting pressures of being together all day long. Do you think this idea can help?

If you and your partner need support to enhance your relationship or help with navigating conflicts during these challenging times, you can reach out to me for a free consultation.

Children who act our sending us a signal that they can’t cope and they need connection. That connection can still come with limits of course, but our experience with the most difficult and complex kids tells us that the reason children act out is because something isn’t working for them; not because they want to be perceived as unlovable, out of control, or bad.
