In honor of Superbowl Sunday, let's show some love for the football hold! This breastfeeding position is a bit of an underdog, often taking a backseat to the more common cradle hold positions.
It can take some time and skill to master, but it can be so very worth it!
For c-section parents, it prevents any pressure on your incision.
For twin parents, it allows you to have both babes latched at once.
You can do the football hold while sitting up, leaning back, or even standing up.
It can be great for parents with large breasts, fast let-down, or plugged ducts. It may be the position of choice for babies with torticollis or tension.

You only need one arm to support your baby (except for those very hard-working twin mammas!), leaving one hand free to do other important tasks, like eat snacks (the most important Superbowl activity, right?!)

This was the "advice" a client of mine recently recieved from another healthcare professional.

For most people, feeding on-demand is usually the best way to maintain milk supply and to ensure your baby is getting the nutrition they need, when they need it.
However, you can't feed on-demand "every 3h". Feeding every 3h means you are scheduling feeds.

On-demand feeds will often be at various intervals throughout the day and night. It requires paying close attention to your baby's feeding cues. Some feeds might be 1h apart, others might be 2, 3, or 4h apart.
Your baby will show hunger cues when they are hungry, and they unfortunately rarely follow any set schedule.

Contact your local IBCLC today if you are looking for guidance and support on how to best support your baby's nutritional needs!

It's true: rates of mastitis increase over the holidays.

Family gatherings where everyone is passing the baby around (ahem, because EVERYONE thinks they can settle the baby better than you, ammirite?), losing track of time while socializing, feeling awkward feeding during the gathering....there are many situations that can lead to Christmastitis.

In addition, decorating, travelling, shopping, cooking, and just being so darn BUSY can all lead to skipped feeds and prolonged breast fullness.
You will KNOW this is happening because your breast (it commonly affects just one breast at a time, though it can affect both) will feel swollen, hard, and warm to touch. Redness, pain, fever, and an overall flu-like crappy feeling are also common markers for mastitis.

What to do?

For prevention:
- Set clear boundaries for yourself and others
- Pay attention to how you're feeling: don't try to ignore engorgement
- Don't try to do it all (maybe don't feel obligated to host any holiday dinners this year)
- Be assertive with pushy family members: you know your baby's feeding cues best.
- Take it easy and rest whenever possible

For treatment:
- Don't try to ignore or brush off symptoms: I know, you don't have time for mastitis, but ignoring it will only make it so. much. worse.
- Continue to feed your baby on-demand
- If you feel engorged between feeds, you can hand express or pump JUST for comfort (a few minutes might be enough to soften tissues and make you more comfortable- too much extra milk removal can cause oversupply and worsen the situation!)
- Cool compresses between feeds to ease inflammation
- REST!
- See your doctor: antibiotics may be needed (yes, they are safe to take during breastfeeding!)

Ok, so here's the deal: YES, you can have wine (or any alcohol of your choice). A little strategy is all you need. Just remember: alcohol passes very easily into your breastmilk. The level of alcohol in your breastmilk will be roughly the same as your blood alcohol level. How is this still safe for breastfeeding? Well, with a little planning, it is totally safe!

Breastfeed just before you plan to have that drink (or two). No need to "pump and dump" as the ONLY thing that reduces your blood alcohol level (and therefore milk alcohol level) is TIME.

Alcohol affects everyone a bit differently, but a simple rule of thumb is to wait 1-2 hours after EACH alcoholic beverage before breastfeeding again.

Now, if you REALLY want to let loose (no judgement here)- you should be prepared to pump and dump at some point (my rule is to go no more than 4 hours between feeds or pumping sessions). Totally skipping even just one feed an put you at risk for engorgement, or even mastitis! And yes, if you have had several drinks within an hour or so of pumping, you should discard this milk (hence the term "pump and dump").
