This hit hard... When I do feedback meetings I always explain that not only the child being assessed gets deregulated, but the adults too. Both typical and neurotypical children and adults become overwhelmed by sensory input (over touched, everything is loud, it was a hard day of a lot of physical labour/play) or by stress (deadlines, getting hurt, fights), it's the threshold for these things that sets the two apart.

UN-fun facts about autistic elopement:

Studies show that roughly 50% of autistic children attempt to elope at least once after the age of 4.

Elopement is often an attempt to escape sensory overwhelm, avoid anxiety, seek something desired, or cope with distress.

Elopement is linked to a high risk of injury or death, particularly from drowning or traffic accidents.

Many children have patterns related to their elopement behavior. Understanding why they’re trying to leave can help prevent it.

While safety tools like door alarms and tracking devices can help, the best prevention comes from skill building; sensory accommodations, communication supports, emotional regulation strategies, and consistent routines.

Blaming parents or teachers when elopement happens is harmful. What we need is education, resources, and compassion.

Interception can feel like such an ominous word, this is a really good read! Especially if supporting a child in toilet training and/or emotional control 😊

🤔 What is Interoceptive Awareness?

Interoceptive awareness is how we understand and interpret signals from inside our bodies. 🧠❤️ It’s a key player in sensory processing, emotional understanding, and how we respond to life’s experiences. Here's why it matters:

🔹 Body Sensations: Helps us notice signals like heartbeat, breathing, hunger, or body temperature.
🔹 Emotional Awareness: Connects body sensations with emotions, helping us navigate social and everyday experiences. 💬❤️
🔹 Sensory Processing: Works alongside other senses to shape how we interpret and respond to the world around us.
🔹 Brain Connection: The insular cortex is central to interoception, emotions, and empathy—key to understanding and managing feelings. 🧠✨

Understanding interoception can unlock new ways to support emotional and sensory well-being in children! 💡👧🧒

✍️ Handwriting Engages the Brain Like Nothing Else! 🧠

Research shows that handwriting stimulates more complex brain activity compared to typing! Using EEG technology, scientists found that writing by hand activates key brainwaves:

Theta waves: Critical for working memory and learning new information.

Alpha waves: Boost focus and long-term memory.

Typing, with its repetitive finger movements, can’t match the rich experience of handwriting, which involves vision, motor skills, and body awareness. Handwriting isn’t just a skill—it’s a brain workout! 🖋️✨

Earlier doesn't mean better 😊😊

Earlier doesn’t always mean better.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Her kid walked at one year, yours walked at 18 months, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 it doesn’t matter.⁣⁣

Her kid potty-trained at two years old, yours didn't potty-train until four years old, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 it doesn’t matter.⁣⁣

Her kid recognized all his letters and numbers before pre-school, yours had no interest until almost four, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 it doesn’t matter.⁣⁣

Her kid was sleeping through the night by three months, yours wasn’t sleeping through the night until two years old, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 it doesn’t matter.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Because reaching developmental milestones early means 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 in the long run.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Because a college professor won’t wonder how old her students were when they could count to one hundred or spell their names.⁣⁣

And no one will know or care if the Harvard graduate or the CEO had a pacifier or didn't potty-train until five years old.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What matters most is the whole child,⁣⁣
who 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 are,⁣⁣
and how kind 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 are⁣⁣.
⁣⁣
So let the pressure go,⁣⁣
and let your kids be kids.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Don’t rush them through their childhoods,⁣⁣
and make them miss out⁣⁣
because they’re too busy meeting milestone after milestone.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Besides, earlier doesn’t always mean better.
