šŸ‘„ Let's connect and grow together Today, my teaching centers on providing a yoga experience that is supportive and adapted to the aging process we all (hopefully) experience. I really don’t care wh

at your poses look like—I do care that you gain the intended benefit from them. My goal is for my students to leave our practices feeling ease and comfort in their bodies and a calm, contented mind, carrying these feelings into their everyday lives. Yoga changed my life when I began taking classes in 2001, not just by improving my strength and mobility but by helping me learn to quiet the constant dialogue spinning in my mind. Yoga is more than practicality for me—it’s a passion. Much of my spare time is spent studying yoga in all its forms. It’s a vast, amazing subject where learning never ends. I’ve extensively studied yin, hatha, restorative yoga, anatomy, yogic and Taoist philosophy, and five-element and subtle channel theory (TCM). I love blending these traditional teachings with modern science in my studies and classes. In 2024, inspired by personal experiences with Alzheimer’s in my family, I became certified as a Brain Longevityā„¢ Specialist with the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation. I now integrate brain wellness techniques into my classes, helping students support their cognitive health. I recently began incorporating QiGong into my teaching and leading seated and standing QiGong classes. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how effectively just a few minutes of consistent QiGong practice has calmed my nervous system and enhanced my brain health. I'm excited to share these simple yet powerful techniques with you. About Tracey Drake

I was born and raised on a tiny island called Guernsey, located between England and France. My parents and extended family still live there, and I visit when possible. But in August 1999, when I was 31, I came to Peterborough, Ontario and have lived in this area ever since. I cannot imagine not living near water. I love the outdoors, especially in summer, when I can spend time on and in the beautiful lakes in this area. I share my love of the outdoors and of animals with my life partner, Graeme. We enjoy spending time with our families, walking our dogs, mucking out stalls and aging well together. You may see our adorable dogs, Chewy and Sophie, make appearances in my live online classes. In addition to teaching and studying yoga, I work in a private horse barn caring for retired competition horses. I’ve loved horses since I was very young, and I began yoga with the aim of remaining strong and mobile so that I could work with them—and it’s worked!

If I get dementia, I’d like my family to hang this wish list up on the wall where I live. I want them to remember these things.

1a. Every time you enter the room announce yourself. ā€œHi Mom- it’s Margaret.ā€
NEVER ask- Do you know who I am??? That causes anxiety.

1. If I get dementia, I want my friends and family to embrace my reality.

2. If I think my spouse is still alive, or if I think we’re visiting my parents for dinner, let me believe those things. I’ll be much happier for it.

3. If I get dementia, don’t argue with me about what is true for me versus what is true for you.

4. If I get dementia, and I am not sure who you are, do not take it personally. My timeline is confusing to me.

5. If I get dementia, and can no longer use utensils, do not start feeding me. Instead, switch me to a finger-food diet, and see if I can still feed myself.

6. If I get dementia, and I am sad or anxious, hold my hand and listen. Do not tell me that my feelings are unfounded.

7. If I get dementia, I don’t want to be treated like a child. Talk to me like the adult that I am.

8. If I get dementia, I still want to enjoy the things that I’ve always enjoyed. Help me find a way to exercise, read, and visit with friends.

9. If I get dementia, ask me to tell you a story from my past.

10. If I get dementia, and I become agitated, take the time to figure out what is bothering me.

11. If I get dementia, treat me the way that you would want to be treated.

12. If I get dementia, make sure that there are plenty of snacks for me in the house. Even now if I don’t eat I get angry, and if I have dementia, I may have trouble explaining what I need.

13. If I get dementia, don’t talk about me as if I’m not in the room.

14. If I get dementia, don’t feel guilty if you cannot care for me 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s not your fault, and you’ve done your best. Find someone who can help you, or choose a great new place for me to live.

15. If I get dementia, and I live in a dementia care community, please visit me often.

16. If I get dementia, don’t act frustrated if I mix up names, events, or places. Take a deep breath. It’s not my fault.

17. If I get dementia, make sure I always have my favorite music playing within earshot.

18. If I get dementia, and I like to pick up items and carry them around, help me return those items to their original place.

19. If I get dementia, don’t exclude me from parties and family gatherings.

20. If I get dementia, know that I still like receiving hugs or handshakes.

21. If I get dementia, remember that I am still the person you know and love.ā€

I received some beautiful thank you cards, flowers and chocolate from students this week, and they truly touched my heart. šŸ’š

I don’t teach yoga to be thanked—but to hold space. To share breath, movement, stillness, and community.

That said… when someone takes the time to express their appreciation, it reminds me that this work matters. And it’s not just my work—it’s OUR practice.

Thank you to everyone who shows up, breathes deeply, and chooses self-care over chaos. That’s the real thank you. šŸ™šŸ»ā˜ŗļø

This 45-minute Hatha Yoga and Yang QiGong class is a dynamic, muscular practice. There are lots of different expressions of postures to help build strength and confidence. This practice will leave you feeling like you've had a workout. Expect to feel weak and then strong and rejuvenated! Suitable for most. Yoga experience needed.

This is a strong practice - your heart rate will increase, you may sweat and you may not be able to do all the practice - but that's OK, sometimes I can't either šŸ˜„.

Why Tracey Loves Yin Yoga!

A fellow yoga teacher and friend, Sharon Smith-Carter, suggested I attend a Yin Yoga Training with Paul Grilley, as having attended a workshop herself, had come away with a good impression and was inspired by Paul’s work. Feeling that I had enough to learn and understand about what I then considered to be ā€œtraditionalā€ yoga, I was initially resistant to learning about a ā€œnewā€ yoga, but did eventually attend a week-long workshop in 2012. By day two I was totally intrigued and blown away by the practice and Paul’s teaching. The whole ā€œYinā€ premise turned my original understanding of yoga postures upside down and despite feeling like a fish out of water, I realized that what Paul and Suzee were teaching made perfect sense. By the end of the week I felt like I had started the journey ā€œhome ā€œ in my yoga practice and understanding. There was a great deal more to learn (and still is) and I went on to do a further 200 hours of Yin Yoga Training with Paul and Suzee over two years. Now, a full Yin convert, this practice has saved me physically and emotionally many times, and I continue my learning and practice with joy and enthusiasm. I look forward to sharing Yin Yoga with all who are interested in developing and maintaining a healthy body and mind. I send deep gratitude to Sharon Smith Carter, and Paul and Suzee for helping to show me the way.

Tracey is a Registered Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance and has been teaching since 2006. Originally graduating from Marina MacLean’s Registered Yoga School’s Teacher Training, Tracey has since recorded with Yoga Alliance over 1,000 hours of training in the many aspects of yoga.
