June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.

Each week has its own theme, and from June 1 to 9 that theme is environment, traditional knowledge, and territory.

The Government of Canada website links to resources with information from Indigenous Peoples, allowing an exploration of the history, languages, cultures, and experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada from their perspectives.

Learn about what First Nations, Inuit, and Métis are doing to conserve both traditions and nature, or find out more about treaties and the importance of acknowledging the land we live on at canada.ca/national-indigenous-history-month.

The last Sunday in May marks the beginning of National AccessAbility Week (NAAW)!

From March 1985 to May 1987, Rick Hansen wheeled over 40,000 km through 34 countries in what was called the Man in Motion World Tour. He did this to raise awareness of the potential of people with disabilities as well as create accessible and inclusive communities following a spinal cord injury in his teens that left him a paraplegic.

Originally dubbed “National Access Awareness Week” in 1988 and inspired by the Man in Motion Tour, this week stands to continue raising awareness of the need for inclusivity and accessibility in our communities. It is also a week to celebrate Canadians with disabilities, their voice, leadership, and impact.

May is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month, and it’s not too late to register for an MS Walk!

Sunday, May 26 is the MS Walk, where Canadians come together to show that nobody living with MS is alone.

MS attacks myelin, the protective coating on nerves, and over time may cause extreme fatigue, lack of coordination, weakness, tingling, impaired sensation, vision problems, bladder problems, cognitive impairment, and mood changes. It’s considered an episodic disability, which means the duration and severity of these symptoms can vary.

You can find a walk near you at the MS Walk website as well as more information MS Canada. Together, we can build a world free of multiple sclerosis.

Did you know May is Sun Awareness Month?

This summer, make sunscreen a part of you and your children’s daily routine! Try keeping sunscreen by toothbrushes, to be applied after brushing your teeth in the morning. This is especially important on days with a UV index over 3! Check out the Canadian Dermatology Association’s website or Facebook Canadian Dermatology Association for more helpful tips.

Remember to stay hydrated, cool, and protected from the summer sun during all your summer fun!
