That space between stimulus and response is where you have the power of choice. Just learn to cultivate it. In that pause, you can explore the many ways you can go, the various pathways to respond and then choose the one that is most effective. Not everything requires an automatic response.

I'm naturally a giver. But even I, many times find myself on the other end of the spectrum, feeling tired and unmotivated. What I learned of the many years of work in this field is in order to give to others, and feel the benefits of it, we first need to fill our own cups. I'm sure you've heard the saying "empty cups can't pour out". However, many times we lack the vocabulary to figure out exactly what we need. We sit there frustrated trying to make sense out of a feeling and instead fuel emotions such as anger, sadness, irritation, to say the least.

The key is to become aware of what you are lacking. What do I need? Look at the words in the post above and start to recognize your needs. Once you can pinpoint your need you can then turn to ways to fill your cup (call your vent partner, take a bath, make a cup of tea, read a book, watch a movie, listen to your favourite tune, tune off social media, hug a loved one, play with your pet, say a prayer, the list goes on).
Only then will you be able to give to others and feel good about it.

The last couple of weeks were obscured by talks of uncertainty, which resulted in thoughts such as “what’s going to happen?” “How will we get through this?” These were subsequently followed by feelings of fear and anxiety, fluctuating throughout the day. As a result, I recall my heart felt heavy at times, my body not motivated to move, as if paralysis took over me. After a week or so I didn’t know what to think, feel, or do; I simply went through the motions and got my day to day done. However, as we approach the fourth week of social distancing in the COVID-19 Pandemic which has come with immense changes in the way I work, my home and school life, the way I carry out my relationships and connectedness; I am starting to realizing a subtle sense of still starting to emanate within me.

Feelings don't always have to be expressed by speaking. Many times release can happen through creative ways. Find a way that speaks to you and start to implement it daily. Try another and experiment to see what brings you the most positive outcome. I personally love movement and art. Mind you, I'm not an artist at all, but I enjoy the silence between the strokes of my paintbrush and my mind.

Nowadays the term self-care is thrown around all the time, making most of us feel guilty of not being able to pursue something that others find so easy. This very term “self-care” perplexed me for a while as I wondered why it is so easy for some people to carve out time for themselves and yet others like me to struggle with the very thought. For a very long time, I could not seem to enjoy“me time” without it being wrapped in guilt. Over the years, as I worked with survivors of trauma I journeyed into concepts such as mindfulness, self-compassion and kindness. Concepts that not only transformed my clinical work but also changed my life into one that is more meaningful and valued. Today I’m going to share with you my thoughts on self-compassion; both from a professional and personal perspective. Whether you struggle with depression, anxiety, trauma, stress or self-worth or are someone just looking for something new to add in your life, incorporating a self-compassion practice will only benefit you......

Know when to stop the Co-vid talk
Know which platforms are the most trusted
Spread hope not Fear
Check-in on loved ones and yourself daily.

Pause every now and then and recollect yourself, ask yourself "How am I doing?"
"What do I need right now?"
"What am I able to do right now -make a cup of tea, look outside, cuddle with a pet or child, call a loved one, say a prayer...".

We should start choosing our thoughts like we choose our clothes for the day.” —Farnoosh Brock

Every single morning you wake up with a choice. To wear or not to wear! Grubby or chic, there is some contemplation whereby you chose one look over another to accompany you all day long. The good thing about thoughts are that unlike clothes, we can change them any time or place; sometimes every minute, second or even less.
Only because you started off thinking negatively this morning, you’re not obliged to stick with those same self-defeating, dis-empowering thoughts. You have the power of choice!

“You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate. If you want to control things in your life so bad, work on the mind. That’s the only thing you should be trying to control.” Elizabeth Gilbert.

What an insightful journey this is. Every day I learn many lessons about myself, but one of the most important and yet simplest ones is that I need to Breathe!
And I don’t only mean the repetitive physiological process of taking in air into the lungs and then expelling it.
Every day, I need to intentionally breathe in life in its most abundance of blessings and exhale anxieties, worries, frustrations, sadness and all the other emotions that stagger my growth.
“I am never alone wherever I am. The air itself supplies me with a century of love. When I breathe in, I am breathing in the laughter, tears, victories, passions, thoughts, memories, existence, joys, moments, and the hues of the sunlight on many tones of skin; I am breathing in the same air that was exhaled by many before me. The air that bore them life. And so how can I ever say that I am alone?”
