This past summer, PROUD’s Co-Executive Director, Chloë G.K. Atkins, published an article in the CHEST Journal on medical decision-making on mechanical ventilator access. The dilemma of rationing critical care resources first gained media attention during the COVID-19 pandemic, informing Chloë’s research.

L’été dernier, Chloë G.K. Atkins, codirectrice exécutive de PROUD, a publié un article dans le CHEST Journal sur la prise de décision médicale concernant l’accès au respirateur mécanique. PROUD is starting off 2025 with an exciting announcement: our research has been selected for presentation at the 40th Annual Pacific Rim International Conference on Disability and Diversity!

Our presentation, entitled “Mapping Intersectional Access: The Creation of Accessible Maps By and For the Disabled Community,” discusses the findings from our on-going work with the Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy department at the University of Toronto as we collaboratively map the Church and Wellesley village in Toronto. In-person or virtual tickets are available until March 1, 2025 - find out more through the link in our bio!

PROUD commence l’année 2025 par une annonce passionnante : notre recherche a été sélectionné pour être présenté à la 40e conférence internationale annuelle de la région du Pacifique sur le handicap et la diversité !

Notre présentation, intitulée « Mapping Intersectional Access : The Creation of Accessible Maps By and For the Disabled Community » (La création de cartes accessibles par et pour la communauté des personnes handicapées), discute des résultats de notre travail en cours avec le département des sciences de l’occupation et de l’ergothérapie de l’Université de Toronto, alors que nous cartographions en collaboration le village de Church et Wellesley à Toronto. With 2024 coming to an end, we want to remind you that PROUD is a charitable organization and there is still time to give this year.

Private donations facilitate PROUD’s ability to apply for additional funding which supports our research into disability. Please reach out to info@theproudproject.ca for all donations inquiries. You can also make e-transfers to donate@theproudproject.ca and you will receive a charitable tax receipt in return.

We are PROUD to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities! This is the 32nd annual IDPD which celebrates disabled folks and draws attention to the continued fight for a more accessible and inclusive world.

We are thrilled to announce the release of “A conversation with Fabrice Chanut”! It is the last episode of the second season of our podcast, Broadcastability. Chloë (our Co-Executive Director) and Isabelle (our Research Associate) speak with Chanut, a French director who produces the TV series, “Vestiaires,” The amusing series sheds light on the lives of ordinary people with disabilities. The show now has an international audience as Chanut’s team has recently filmed two seasons in Canada. Fabrice shares his life journey and hopes for the future of media and disability.

Nous sommes ravis d’annoncer la sortie de “Une conversation avec Fabrice Chanut.” C’est le dernier épisode de la deuxième saison de notre podcast, Broadcastability. Chloë (notre Co-Directrice Exécutive) et Isabelle (notre Collaborateur Scientifique) s’entretiennent avec Chanut, un réalisateur français qui produit la série télévisée “Vestiaires”. La série a maintenant un public international puisque l’équipe de Chanut a récemment filmé deux saisons au Canada. Fabrice partage son parcours et ses espoirs pour l’avenir des médias et du handicap.

Rencontrez Ness, l’un de nos boursiers 2024-2025 ! Ness Maloney est candidate au doctorat en anthropologie socioculturelle à l’université de Toronto. Elle a mené des recherches ethnographiques avec des défenseurs des droits des personnes handicapées et des services de soins dans les îles Cook, ainsi que des projets antérieurs en Nouvelle-Zélande et à Tonga. Leurs travaux actuels montrent comment les réseaux de soins sont créés dans le cadre des flux mondiaux de pouvoir, de personnes et d’argent, et comment ces économies de soins façonnent de manière inégale les expériences des personnes handicapées dans le monde. Ces travaux s’appuient sur les études critiques du handicap et les théories féministes des soins pour explorer la manière dont les personnes handicapées négocient les soins dans le cadre des contraintes du capitalisme mondial et du néocolonialisme. Ness s’intéresse particulièrement à la manière dont la prévalence des soins prodigués par des personnes handicapées et des soins mutuels, en particulier dans les îles Cook, complique les notions dominantes de soins et d’(inter)dépendance.

Meet Ness, one of our 2024-2025 Fellows! Ness Maloney is a PhD candidate in Socio-Cultural Anthropology at the University of Toronto who has conducted ethnographic research with disabled self-advocates and care services in the Cook Islands, as well as past projects in New Zealand and Tonga. Their current work traces how networks of care are carved out within global flows of power, people, and money, and how these care economies unevenly shape disability experiences globally. This work draws on critical disability studies and feminist theories of care to explore how disabled people negotiate care within the constraints of global capitalism and neocolonialism. Ness is particularly interested in how the prevalence of disabled care-giving and mutual care, especially in the Cook Islands, complicates dominant notions of care and (inter)dependency.

Rencontrez Keegan, l’un de nos boursiers 2024-2025 ! Keegan (il/ils) est étudiant en première année de maîtrise en information à la Faculté d’information de l’Université de Toronto et détient un diplôme en développement social et communautaire autochtone du Georgian College ainsi qu’un baccalauréat en travail social de l’Université métropolitaine de Toronto. Ils ont plus d’une décennie d’expérience dans l’organisation de Fierté internationale, nationale et locale (président de Fierte Simcoe Pride de 2020 à 2021, représentant régional pour l’Ontario avec Fierte Canada Pride de 2020 à 2021, représentant régional pour le Canada avec InterPride de 2019 à 2020, et secrétaire de Fierte Simcoe Pride de 2017 à 2020). Il a fondé plusieurs événements communautaires qui ont toujours lieu chaque année (Annual Winter Feast, Trans March). De 2021 à 2024, Keegan a été coordonnateur de programme dans le cadre d’un programme d’éducation à l’inclusion 2S-LGBTQ+ financé par le gouvernement fédéral, développant des ateliers et fournissant une formation virtuelle à plus de 20 000 personnes. Ils sont actuellement le chef et le cofondateur de l’In Love and Leather Community Archive - une initiative q***r/trans de base dédiée au traitement des collections personnelles des personnes âgées et des aînés q***r et trans. Depuis juillet 2024, il est coordinateur du Centre for Global Disability Studies, un centre interdisciplinaire d’études sur le handicap basé à l’université de Toronto. Il vit actuellement dans le centre-ville de Toronto avec sa compagne, ses trois chats et une collection de timbres à biscuits nordiques qui ne cesse de s’agrandir.

Meet Keegan, one of our 2024-2025 Fellows! Keegan (he/they) is a first year Master of Information Student with the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto and holds a diploma in Indigenous Community and Social Development from Georgian College and a Bachelor of Social Work from Toronto Metropolitain University. They have over a decade in international, national and grassroots Pride organizing experience (President of Fierte Simcoe Pride from 2020 - 2021, Regional Representative for Ontario with Fierte Canada Pride from 2020 - 2021, Regional Representative for Canada with InterPride from 2019 - 2020, and the Secretary of Fierte Simcoe Pride from 2017 - 2020). He has founded multiple community events that still occur annually (Annual Winter Feast, Trans March). From 2021 - 2024, Keegan was a Program Coordinator with a federally funded 2S-LGBTQ+ inclusion education program, developing workshops and providing virtual training to over 20,000 individuals. They are currently the lead and co-founder of the In Love and Leather Community Archive- a grassroots, q***r/trans initiative dedicated to processing the personal collections of q***r and trans older adults and elders. Since July 2024 he has been the Centre Coordinator for the Centre for Global Disability Studies, an interdisciplinary center of disability studies scholarship based out of the University of Toronto. He currently lives in downtown Toronto with his partner, three cats and a rapidly increasing collection of nordicware cookie stamps.
