We are swimming in a toxin pool on a daily basis. And, it's affecting our health at a cellular level!

Although there is only so much we can do to avoid toxins in a toxic world, there are simple ways we can avoid them and create significant benefit on our health and the environment's.

- Buying local, regenerative or organic foods is one way to avoid the burden of pesticides, herbicides (such as the devil glyphosate) and antibiotics. Buying local also ensures you get nutrient density from the foods you eat.
- Investing in a good air purifier can go a long way to protect you in your homes. Our homes are known to be highly toxic in so many ways, whether from heating systems, cooking systems, or even mold! Cleaning the air is a great way to protect yourself and your family.
- Our skin is a big mouth! What we put on it matters! Make sure you use natural, simple, toxic and cruelty free products.
- So many of us have become mouth breathers. But breathing through our nose is such a powerful filtering system! If you are a mouth breather, re-train your nose by focusing on breathing through it.
- Dental health is most underestimated. Though so many toxins can enter the bloodstream and create inflammation in our body. Try to do a hygiene check at least twice a year.
- What you wear matters! It matters for the planet as by the way it is produced, but also for our health as toxic load will enter via our biggest organ, the skin! Be mindful of what you buy. Buy less, but buy quality, sustainable clothing.

Besides those simple tips that you can implement in your life, remember that doing a gentle detox twice a year is highly beneficial. But it has to be supervised if you don't know what you are doing. Don't juice or restrict calories, rathe focus on opening your 3 detox pathways. Detoxification must start from a place of strength! That means if you are dealing with specific health issues, it's not the best place to start!

Address the health issues with the support of a functional medicine practitioner, and create solid grounds to detox and reduce the inflammation in your body!

The health of our planet is closely connected to Nature's health. What we do to Nature, we do to ourselves.

However, we have to refrain from living in fear or worry. Instead, we can focus on hope, and the small actions we can do every day to create a healthy environment for us and all living species, where we can cohabitate coherently.

Here are my top 3 small actions that I try to achieve to leave this place better than in my lifetime, for my children and future generation. The benefits of those small action is that they contribute to my own and . They provide me with joy and nourishment.

- Start a small garden. Whether it is a flower garden to attract pollinators, growing herbs on your balcony to the full size vegetable garden, start somewhere to connect to Nature and the food you eat. This will also immensely support your mental health and help you defeat stress and anxiety.

- Connect to Nature every day to nurture your love for Her. Go to the park, or the woods. Just go out, breathe fresh air, oxygenate your body and your soul. All these are extremely powerful for optimal health.

- Be mindful of your consumerism habits. Buy less and mindfully from brands that support the environment and respect their workforce. Reuse, repair, recycle. Buy with the planet and your needs in mind, not your impulsions and desire to fit in or fill a gap in your life with "stuff".

These simple habits, if applied by many, can be so powerful to make a difference in our community.

Enjoy life and Nature, enjoy every second of this beautiful world, and love it. Love yourself and create a life of purpose and service. The universe will reward.

Tryptophan: required for serotonin pathways (precursor of melatonin) -> may be low in those with trouble staying asleep, addictions/cravings, disordered eating, mood imbalances, and heightened pain perception. Poultry breast, pork, sockeye salmon, soy and tuna

Tyrosine: necessary for thyroid hormone, melanin, dopamine, and norepinephrine production. Supports stress resilience! red meat, pork, sockeye salmon, turkey, legumes, dairy

Taurine: critical for neurotransmitter GABA (calming!) animal protein esp. seafood and human breastmilk (key for infant development)

Histidine: needed to make histamine (required for stomach acid, stable mood and calm) seafood and fish, bonito/dashi, meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, specific grains (rice, wheat, rye, buckwheat) and corn.

Lysine: essential and must be balanced with arginine; ensures optimal immune function against reactivating viruses. proteins, eggs, some dairy - lysine is commonly deficient in diets high in grains!

Arginine: involved in immune function. Eggs, dairy, animal meats, nuts and seeds

Glycine: most important nonessential amino acid. Heals the gut lining but also may play a role in memory, treatment of sleep issues, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and autism. Gelatin, collagen, bone broth, poultry skin, dairy, meat, eggs, fish, legumes, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, kale, pumpkin, banana and kiwi.

Glutamine: required for immune function. eggs, animal proteins, dairy, fish, soy, rice, corn, and oats

An amazing description of what functional medicine is. If you are tired of not getting any answers to your health issues and need individualized support, reach out to my practice. Functional medicine is the science of creating health. When you create health, disease disappears.

The body comprises seven dynamically interconnected, networked systems that underlie all disease—155,000 diseases, in fact. What are these systems?

1. Assimilating nutrients, digestion, and the microbiome
2. Defense and repair (immune and inflammatory system)
3. Energy production (mitochondria)
4. Detoxification
5. Transportation (circulation and lymphatic system)
6. Communication (hormones, neurotransmitters, etc.)
7. The body’s structure (from cellular structures to the musculo-skeletal system)

When these systems are in dynamic balance, health and longevity are the natural consequences. Disrupt any system and disease and aging occur.

Functional medicine provides a road map to assess all the environmental, lifestyle, and predisposing factors—genes, stress, toxins, trauma, microbes, diet, allergens, and so on, that cause imbalance in these systems.

We identify the what (symptoms) and the why (too much or too little of what is needed for health) so we can determine the how (removing the impediments to health and adding the ingredients for health).

This allows us to focus on the personalized strategies for lifestyle interventions and managing our environment to create the best outcomes, prevent chronic disease, and extend healthy life span.

Hormones are molecules of communication. They are messenger chemicals circulating within and between cells. They allow the body to interact with and respond to its environment. But, they must balance each other for optimal functioning.

The thyroid, in partnership with cortisol (our stress hormone!), controls the body's metabolism. It makes hormones that influence the speed of everything metabolic in the body. It makes hormones that influence the action of other hormones in the body and affects our cellular energy utilization: weight, body temperature, skin, cholesterol, GI function, immune function, heart function, PMS, s*x drive, fertility, and mood.

Protecting your thyroid is therefore crucial! But the interconnectedness of the thyroid and the adrenal glands (also controlling the body's metabolism primarily via cortisol release) is one that you want to remember. Stress hormones secreted by the adrenal gland can block thyroid hormone function and lower your metabolism as a protective mechanism.

Did you know that common causes of intestinal permeability are:

- NSAID drugs
- Other drugs (e.g. hormones, birth control pills, antibiotics)
- Microbial overgrowth (e.g. SIBO)
- Histamine overload
- High blood sugar
- Insufficient Vit D and/or zinc
- Isolation!
- Chemicals, pesticides, food additives, glyphosate!

- High-processed foods

If is taking away your joy, don't wait to act, cause it could cause chronic dis-ease. Book a consult to discuss this! My practice offers complementary pre-recorded yoga therapy classes to help you calm your nervous system down - a perfect combination to the health protocols I prescribe.

Chronic stress has become epidemic in our society where faster is better and we attempt to pack more obligations into our ever-expanding schedules.

Among its havoc, one meta-analysis involving 300 studies found chronic stress could damage your immunity. If that wasn’t enough, stress also makes you fat and contributes to diabesity. A study in the journal Appetite found stressed-out women had significantly higher waist circumference compared to non-stressed women.

Experts have long known a relationship exists between stress, blood sugar and belly fat. In the face of chronic stress, insulin increases. This drives the relentless metabolic dysfunction that leads to weight gain, insulin resistance and ultimately diabetes.

When you’re stressed, your adrenal glands release hormones like adrenaline and cortisol that flood your system, raising your heart rate, increasing your blood pressure, making your blood more likely to clot, damaging your brain’s memory center, increasing belly fat storage and generally wreaking havoc on your body.

So what can you do? Learn how to ACTIVELY relax.

Try meditation or yoga, go for a walk in nature, or learn something new.

Sometimes supplementation may be necessary to help lower stress levels. Here are some supplements that can help lower anxiety or depression symptoms:

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This nutrient is like a brake for overstimulation in the brain. When you have low levels of GABA, it is harder for you to relax after your body has released excitatory neurotransmitters like epinephrine and norepinephrine.

Other supplements include vitamin B-complex, L-theanine (an amino acid in green tea that promotes relaxation and calmness), 5-hydroxytryptophan, or 5-HTP (a serotonin precursor), inositol (which helps balance neurotransmitters), and herbs like rhodiola rosea and ashwagandha.

As with any supplement it’s best to speak to your doctor before taking anything new.
