I hope everyone had a wonderful summer!

During the summer, I participated in an intensive stuttering program by ISTAR (Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research) and was trained in their Comprehensive Stuttering Program (CSP). I also took some time to travel to El Salvador and Guatemala.

I can't wait to work with you in the new school year!

What did you do this summer?

Had a client tell me that he would like to be an SLP when he grows up, so he can help kids with their sounds too!!! He and I were so proud today, when he was finally able to make his sound!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Simple therapy idea!

I have a kiddo working on the 'j' sound for his name. He loved copying the letter 'J' while saying his sound.

Besides working on his sound, this also target pre-literacy skills, phonological awareness and fine motor skills (pencil grip).

Tip: if your child is having difficulty with holding the pen correctly, use a broken crayon. The shorter crayon can help with correct pencil grip.

HAPPY EASTER 🐰

Have some fun with your child by painting Easter eggs together. Art activities is a great way to build language skills in your child. Some language skills that you can target include:

👉Direction following. For example, "Paint a pink dot than a blue line.", "Paint the line under the dots.", "Put the paint brush in the water.".

👉Requesting. Have your child request for objects (e.g., paintbrush, egg) or the colour of paint (e.g., blue paint, red paint).

👉Answering "yes/no" questions. For example, "Do you want the egg?", "Do you like to eat eggs?".

👉Answering "wh-" questions. Ask your child questions involving who, what, when, where, and why. For example, "Where should we put the egg?", "Who brings you chocolate eggs?", "Why does does a bunny bring you eggs?".

👉Vocabulary based on the theme (e.g., bunny, egg, paint, chick).

👉Descriptive words and concepts (e.g., wet/dry, big/little, bright, wavy/straight).

👉Sequencing. You can teach sequencing to your child, by using words like "Frist, then, next, last". For example, "First get an egg, then pick an colour, next put your paint brush in the colour and last paint the egg".

👉Prepositions. Once the eggs are all dried, hide them around the house and have your child look for it "under" the couch, "on" the table, "beside" the tv, etc. Or you can have them tell you where to hide the eggs.

Let me know if you painted any Easter eggs with your child. Have a great Easter! 🐰

St. Patrick's Day Activity Idea! 🍀

Try hiding objects or pictures in a sensory bin. 🍀🌈
You can use beads, macaroni, cut up ribbon, rice, sand, beans, etc. as your sensory bin and hide words such as, rainbow, pot of gold, four leaf clover etc.

What can you work on with this activity? Here are some ideas:
👉Vocabulary based on the theme (e.g., clover, rainbow, etc.) or descriptive words (e.g., squish, sticky, smooth, rough, scoop, etc.).
👉Increasing length of utterances (e.g., if your child says 'smooth', you can say 'smooth beads'). Follow their lead and add a word to what they say.
👉Requesting. Have your request for the scoop or to open the lid (e.g., "I want the scoop" or "I need help").
👉Turn taking. Take turns looking for objects. You can model words like "It's my turn", "It's your turn".
👉Direction Following. Have your child follow directions by manipulating the objects in the bin. For example, "Scoop the bean into the cup, before you find the rainbow.", "Put the pot of gold in the middle of the bin.".
👉Speech Sounds. You can hide objects or pictures with the sound your child is having difficulties. When they find a picture or object, model the correct sound for them to hear, by getting down face to face, and saying it louder and longer (e.g., RRRRRainbow). Do not expect them to say the sound/word. It is important for them to hear how the correct sound is made.

Remember to keep it fun!!

Winter is here! The snow is falling and with less time for us to be outside, why not have an indoor obstacle course for your child?

An indoor obstacle course is great for promoting speech and language skills, as well as, gross motor skills (climbing, jumping, balancing, running, walking, spinning and rolling etc.) and fine motor skills (pinching clothespins, putting stickers on cardboard etc.).

You can use whatever you find in your house to build an indoor obstacle course. Some ideas include:
- pillows
- blankets
- chairs
- ottomans
- cardboard box
- pop up tunnels
- table
- tents
- hula-hoops
- couches
- books
- balls
- tape
- string
- stickers
- clothespin
- balloon
- basket

Here are some language skills you can target:
- prepositions (e.g., in, out, on, under, beside, behind, between, over, through, around)
- direction following (e.g., Jump three times then throw the ball into the box)
- basic concepts (e.g., throw the big/little ball, stop/go)
- sequencing (e.g., First jump on the cushions, then go in the box, after go under the table, last go through the tunnel)

Let me know if you've made an indoor or outdoor obstacle course.

Children master different sounds at different ages. The ages shown are the average age at which children learn to pronounce these sounds correctly. Some speech sound errors are not typical and require intervention sooner rather than later. If you have concerns about your child’s speech sounds please consult a Speech-Language Pathologist.
