Provincial Health Services Authority - PHSA
Today, we proudly honour the essential role of interpreters in the health care system. Interpreters are skilled professionals who make sure language never stands in the way of safe, compassionate, and equitable care.

Whether interpreting in-person, over the phone, or through video, these individuals bring clarity to complex medical conversations, empower patients to make informed decisions, and ensure that providers can deliver care that is truly patient-centered.

To all the interpreters supporting patients and providers across our health care system: thank you for your professionalism, empathy, and commitment to breaking down barriers. Your work has a profound impact on patient outcomes and experiences, and we are deeply grateful for all you do.

June marks Deaf-Blind Awareness Month—a time to honour the unique experiences and challenges faced by individuals within the Deaf-Blind community. According to the Canadian Deaf-Blind Association, approximately one in 3,000 Canadians are Deaf-Blind, a condition characterized by vision and hearing loss.

“Working with the Deaf-Blind population has reshaped my perspective on nursing and health care,” Alanna shares. “It’s about meeting families where they are at, ensuring the care we provide is patient and family-centered and refraining from making assumptions based solely on a diagnosis. Ensuring this population has equitable access to specialized developmental assessments when needed, is one of our core priorities.”

As we reflect on Deaf-Blind Awareness Month, let’s remember that we all play a role in fostering a more inclusive world. To learn more about services available to support Deaf-Blind individuals accessing health care, please visit phsa.ca/pls.
