Tiered vocabulary: not all words have equal importance in language instruction! A wordโ€™s frequency of use, complexity, and meaning determines which tier it will fall. Most children will enter school knowing Tier 1 words and Tier 2 words are most commonly used for direct instruction in the classroom.

TIER 1: These words are commonly used in everyday conversation. They include sight words, nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

TIER 2: These words are not widely used in speech and daily conversation. Instead, they are often used and found in books and written text, and often have multiple meanings.

TIER 3: These words are low- frequency and occur within specific contexts, such as school subjects, occupations, and hobbies. They have distinct meanings and purposes.

As a parent, there are many things you can do to support your babyโ€™s understanding and build a solid foundation for them to use words later on. ๐Ÿ‘‰ When people ask you "how many words does your baby say", how do you respond? Do you know what counts as a word?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Did you know that first words will likely not sound like an adult form of the word?โฃ Often, little ones will use part of the word (like โ€œdoโ€ for โ€œdogโ€) or approximations (โ€œmemeโ€ for โ€œbabyโ€). These all count towards your little oneโ€™s first words! ๐Ÿ™Œ โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ‘‰ Noises, animal sounds, or exclamations are considered words if your little one uses them consistently to mean the same thing! For example, if your little one says, โ€œuh-ohโ€ every time something falls to the ground, then we would consider โ€œuh-ohโ€ part of your childโ€™s word count. โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ‘‰ Sign language and words in other spoken languages (if your little one is a dual language learner) ALL count as words in your little oneโ€™s vocabulary! โฃ

Many of the words we say In everyday speech are filled with consonant clusters. The word โ€œspaghetti,โ€ for example, has a consonant cluster containing /s/ and /p/ sounds. ๐Ÿ

For toddlers learning to speak, these clusters of consonants can be particularly challenging. Thatโ€™s why young children tend to drop certain consonant sounds or syllables from words, for example, โ€œpaghettiโ€ instead of โ€œspaghetti.โ€ This behaviour is called cluster reduction.

This strategy is a normal part of speech development, consonant cluster reduction beyond the age of approximately four/five can be an indication of a more prolonged problem. The good news is that cluster reduction can be effectively treated by a speech-language pathologist.

Children with speech and language delays are more likely to struggle with literacy skills (i.e. the ability to read and write). Before students are ready to read and write, it is important to develop phonological awareness (PA) skills.

PA is the ability to recognize and manipulate the spoken parts of sentences and words.

PA involves a continuum of skills that are crucial for reading and spelling success. These skills are especially important at the earliest stages of reading development โ€” in pre-school, kindergarten, and first grade for typical readers.

When babies and toddlers are learning how to talk, they exhibit normal patterns of sound errors to simplify tricky speech sounds. These patterns are called phonological processes. Donโ€™t ask them to correct these errors - they canโ€™t help it at the this age! Just model the correct production back to them. So when your child says โ€˜tatโ€™ for cat, model back the correct pronunciation โ€˜thatโ€™s right, thatโ€™s a carโ€™. Source: Bowen, C. (2011). Table 3: Elimination of Phonological Processes.

Speech refers to how we say sounds and words. Speech sounds develop at different times. When toddlers are learning to speak, they are trying to coordinate all the different muscles of the lips, tongue, and jaw and itโ€™s complex processes. Errors are to be expected, therefore, some sound errors are age-appropriate.

This chart shows when 90-100% of children acheive specific speech sounds.
