I highly recommend this incredible presentation! Deborah's information about insulin regulation is presented with excellent visuals that thoroughly explore the concepts central to weight control However, I want to add, that I am not necessarily endorsing her weight loss challenge.

URGE JAR II (from https://phasethreelifecoach.com/blog/)

Do you want to create a new behavior pattern?

In my previous post, before Christmas, I talked of using an ‘Urge Jar/Self-Commitment’ Jar to allow an urge to eat/drink… to go unanswered. This practice of allowing an urge serves the Pavlovian purpose of the eventual Extinction of an unwanted behaviour pattern that no longer serves you (overeating, over desiring, overdrinking)… .

While I have used my urge jar for overeating and subsequent 50-lb weight loss, I currently use this same reward system to form my desired new behaviour pattern of drinking adequate amounts of fluids. I, personally, rarely experience thirst and, as a result, I consume a maximum of 5 eight-ounce glasses of fluids/day. For health-related reasons, I am better served to consume at least 8-10 ounces/day.

So, I set out 2 pretty little dishes, one with 13 of my glass beads and, when I consume 8 ounces of fluids, I transfer one of these beads into the previously empty dish. By the end of the day, I have done what is best for my health (consuming adequate fluid) and, more importantly, I have kept my commitment to myself. Eventually, with continued practice, I will be confident in the new behaviour pattern that I can dispense with the reward system.

Give it a go, and, please let me know if this is a useful strategy for you. To be continued…!

Happy 2021, everyone!

“Urge Jar”

To React, resist, or allow an urge? or Not?

It’s our Covid Era, 2020 Christmas Season and overindulgent eating possibilities abound. Given that we are in our small, local ‘family bubbles’; many of us might feel unable to resist our desire to over sugar and/or overeat. Goodies will be ultra available and tempting. We will have all our justifying thoughts (‘It’s Christmas!’ – ‘Just one won’t hurt!’ – ‘I’ll do better next time but right now!’ – ‘I’ll cut back tomorrow!’ …). Am I right? I have a Pavlovian suggestion for you.

Instructions for the pictured (above) “Urge”/Self-Commitment jar:

Gather 100 items (glass beads, pretty buttons, money…) and a receptacle (jar, cup, Tupperware) that will hold your 100 items. Place 1 bead in your Jar when you manage to allow an urge (desire). Please note, urges seem urgent, but they really are transient if you don’t react to them.

Chose one irresistible X-mas ‘go to’ items that you indulge in consuming. Instead of rewarding yourself by literally ‘inhaling’ that item, be curious, and witness what you are thinking and feeling. Rather than giving in to your impulsive desire, allow your thoughts and feelings/urges to pass. Instead of rewarding the urge with food or …, place a “pretty jewel” /bead in your urge/self-commitment jar. Do this repeatedly and very soon you can recondition your brain. I used this strategy as one of my tools to permanently lose some of the 50 pounds and 10 inches off my waist. More on this to follow in my future postings.

December 15th - Thoughts on the Weather

My daughter Trish and family live on a small island in the Norwegian Sea near the Polar Circle (pop. 500). In all seasons, they head out for daily walks and frequent picnics, always seeking the perfect windbreak. As I donned my winter layers prior to my 7 am walk this morning, I thought of them and you (if you are procrastinating outdoor activity because it is "winter"). I want to challenge you to discover that, whatever your thoughts are about walking in the dark and chill of winter, you have the power to change your thoughts to a thought that will motivate you to start to exercise. Try "I am willing to …" even if it is around your yard or the block. Gradually increase your distance and be consistent (2 or 3 times a week) and soon you can identify yourself as a Winter-time walker. So much fun and it's not even the New Year!

I am looking forward to coaching women 60 and above who are experiencing Mild Cognitive Impairment, either self-perceived or diagnosed, and /or Insulin Resistant weight gain that they think is an inevitable result of aging. I will help them to re-discover their own vitality and creativity.
