Burnout is too common for those who support and care for mothers and babies.

Midwives, nurses, lactation consultants, doulas, doctors...
..whether you work within the confines of a healthcare system whose pace and policies oppose the well-being of you and those you care for....
..or you work alongside that system, with the added tasks of running a business...
..you deserve to thrive AND provide the level of care you know mothers and babies need.

My son - the baby that made me a mother - turns thirteen tomorrow. 💖

This milestone has stirred up emotions and invited reflection and inner exploration, that I wasn't expecting.

The result: the story of my journey from birth trauma and postpartum doubt to healing and wholeness.

Optimal breast pump fl**ge sizing.

What is the diameter of each ni**le?

What size feels comfortable when I’m pumping?

Is fl**ge lubrication helpful? (coconut oil is a great, natural option)

What size fl**ge optimizes pumping output? (Is this different for each side?)

‘Tis the season. Biting insects are one of my least favourite parts of summer but they don’t stop us from being outside!

Our family most often chooses an essential oil combination (good quality oils, diluted to safe levels) for repellant spray. And, we’ve come to love our screen tent during the height of bug biting time - whether at home in the yard or while camping. It’s a great place to play cards at dusk before the campfire is lit!

When the bugs are ravenous, we’ll occasionally use an icaridin product, on our clothes (light long sleeves, pants & hats).

Beyond repellants, check out additional strategies on the last ‘slide’!

More to come on tick bite prevention in another post.

Tick populations thrive this time of year + with rising rates of tick bourne illnesses over the last several years, it’s a great idea to make prevention a part of your routine from spring through fall.

✨ When possible, where light coloured, long pants tucked into socks when spending time outdoors - especially in the woods or around tall grasses.

✨ Regularly apply insect repellent designed to repel ticks. For more info on repellents turn on notifications 🔔 and watch for an upcoming post Babies & Bugs. is a great local Atlantic Canadian company to check out.

✨ Remove ticks from clothing immediately & consider a change of clothes when you get home from spending time outdoors.

✨ Get into the habit of daily tick checks. For kids, the transition into the bathtub or into their pajamas at the end of the day is a great time. I can if you haven’t been outside too much that day - do it anyways so it’s part of you rhythm/routine.

✨ Optimize immunity. It’s your best defense against any illness! Chat with your about the best options/approaches for you & your family.

✨ When you find a tick attached, pause, take a few, slow deep breaths & remove gently, grasping the tick with tweezers as close to the skin as possible & pulling straight up. Monitor for flu-like symptoms & skin rash & seek medical attention immediately if either appear.

Breastfeeding and maternal mental health are interwoven parts of a woman’s journey through matrescence - each potentially impacting the other.

Throughout our lives we hear “it takes a village to raise a child”…and then our culture delivers the opposite with most mothers left alone to do the work of postpartum healing and nurturing their babies for several hours, most days of the week.

In matrescence, I believe it takes a village - an ecosystem of support - to hold and nourish a mother, so she has the resources she needs to nurture her baby.

The next time you encounter a new mother struggling with her mental health or struggling with breastfeeding…instead of telling her to stop breastfeeding, try one or more of the following:

✨ Ask her what she needs & help her meet those needs or connect with the people who’ll help her meet those needs

✨ Offer to help her find mental health &/or breastfeeding support

✨ Bring her a nourishing meal

✨ Do some of the household chores

✨ Offer to snuggle the baby so she can nap (and take baby to her when they’re showing signs of hunger)

✨ Offer to drive her to a local mothering support group or family resource centre so she can connect with other moms

Matrescence MAGIC! ✨ I know 'mom brain' doesn't usually feel magical...but there's a natural wisdom in it that's rarely taught to mothers...it's a natural wisdom that deserves to be honored and celebrated. Your brain and nervous system are inviting you to tap into the inner knowing you're uniquely designed to contain, that can be the guide and the anchor amidst the changes and challenges of early mothering.
