Everyone around you is eagerly slapping on the oil and working on their tans…

"Oh I know what I need to do...to workout....to lose weight...."

I hear that all the time. It drives me nuts.

People saying they "know".

When in fact, most people don't have a clue; and I say that with an objective opinion, because in fact, it's a fact.

Even many trainers have a hard time with their own fitness(just have a look) and they allegedly "know".

To truly know is to be there. To live it.

It's like- only a champion knows what it's like to be champion. No one else does.

So, unless you are there and you are living it.....you don't really know...
..yet.

Are you worth it?

Then why would you ever stop?

Because of what you tell yourself.

Most people WILL stop short of their goal because of what they convince themselves of.

All it takes is to tell yourself one thing:

"Oh, it's snowing/raining today....can't go to the gym."

Do other people going to the gym when it rains/snows?

Then it's not really about the weather.

I am here to tell you that the reason you haven't reached the goal you want because......

YOU HAVE BEEN MAKING EXCUSES....blaming EXTERNAL factors.

That is why you ultimately don't reach your goal.

What are you telling yourself?

"Oh, I am getting old, that's why I can't lose weight."

"My metabolism/genetics don't allow me to lose weight."

*cough cough* BS

“There’s not enough time in my days to exercise.”

“I wish I had the time to get back in shape.”

“If I only had the time to go to the gym.”

“By the time I get home from work, I’m too exhausted to workout.”

“You want me to track my food? I barely have enough time in my day to eat.”

“My life’s really busy, it’s just not a good time for me right now.”

“Between my kids' sports and their school, there’s no time left in my days for me.”

The reality is... time will always seem like a legitimate excuse.

But regardless of how legitimate your excuse is, or how many times you use one...

Dealing with the unfortunate consequences from choosing an excuse over making time is 100% going to catch up to you.

Uncomfortable, unhealthy, unsettling, unavoidable, and without question...uneconomical consequences.

Consequences that could be avoidable by making time now.

Now I realize today might not be the very last day for you to start making time for yourself and your personal health...

What are you going to do NOW?

Most people focus on negative thoughts - anger, jealousy, competition, hate and sadness.

Look, when you focus on s**t, it becomes a priority. When you focus on you, YOU become a priority!

This was something I had to learn the hard way...

Throughout most of my 20's, I hung out with negative people, said stupid things, did stupid things.

It’s no surprise my life was headed in a stupid direction!

But inside I always felt the burning desire for greatness... like I was meant for more, but I was also a champ at ignoring and avoiding the call to the plate.

Truth is, it takes a lot more work to grow and thrive than it does to stay negative and bitter.

So for a long time I chose the later.

Listen, if you focus on what’s going wrong... more things will go wrong in your life!

If you focus on bulls**t conversations or engage in gossip and hate then YOU become paranoid and assume everyone’s gossiping and hating on you.

If you’re jealous of other people’s success, happiness or the things that they have... then you’ll find yourself depressed, broke and feeling empty.

Here’s the BIG lesson for you:

Focus on YOU!!

Focus on everything that you have going for you.

Focus on becoming the best version of yourself!

AND IF YOU YOU REALLY WANT CHANGE?

Set higher standards for yourself and stop accepting the crap that keeps you DOWN.

Commit to better physical, mental and emotional fitness.

“You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take”- Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.

Arguably one of the truest quotes you’ll ever hear, and for good reason.

Because those words literally epitomize success and those who are successful.

Gretzky’s words have become the mantra for people who take “action”.

But also points out a huge mistake we’ve all made at least once:

Never taking the shot!

Usually, because of fear or skepticism that we won’t “score”.

“I can’t lose weight let alone get a flat stomach, so why bother?”...

“I'm too tired, too busy, and just don’t have time”...

Here’s the interesting thing though...

Gretzky finished that quote by saying “even though there is only a 1-5% probability of scoring”.

But that was his mindset, the mindset of just going for it, of not quitting before you’ve started.

If I told you there was 1-5% chance of winning the lottery, you’d go for it all the time, right?

But the thing is, you can’t control the lottery.

But you CAN control your BODY through your lifestyle, the food you eat, and the HABITS you choose to develop.

And the best part?

You can do ALL of that while still living the life you want to live.

Look at me for example: Last few months we went through COVID, the birth of my amazing son(crazy sleeping hours!), birthdays, holidays, and STILL keeping my abs.

How?

Because I’m not just saying f*ck it when life happens.

I just accept there’s give and take to stay lean and healthy….a BALANCE.

Ever say to yourself: "I'm gonna start next week", then your mind conveniently tucks that thought away when next week comes and you continue with your regular HABITS?

You're not alone.

The problem with this, is it leads to doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result...and we know that is one of the definitions of INSANITY.

So what does this tell us?

Our MINDSET is not aligned with our goals because there needs to be CLARITY in what we want, why, and how to get there.

Just flying by the seat of our pants is like blowing up a balloon all the way, letting it go, and watch it fly all over the place, not having a clue where it will land.

This is what happens when you "wing" your health and fitness due to lacking CLARITY.

If I asked you: "WHAT is your goal and WHY is it important to you?", how clear of a picture could you paint for me?

If the answer was: "Well I guess I wanna lose some weight and get fit becaaaause....I want to look and feel good." - that most likely is not a CLEAR enough answer and to stick with something where you don't know exactly what you want or why is not realistic.

Your goal and reason should be important to you enough that you are "committed" to it.

Once you lock that down, then there can be clear steps taken toward implementing NEW HABITS in place of old ones, but it takes time- like developing a skill.

Remember when you first started that new job and you thought "this is too hard", but once you acquired the proficiency through repetition and practice, you mastered it?

Same applies here!

It's no secret losing fat and getting in your absolute best shape takes time.

Yet so many people are looking for some sort of magic pill or shortcut.

The plain and simple truth is that losing fat and getting into great shape requires time, effort and consistency on mastering the basics.

I know, it's not a very compelling statement, but it's true.

"But Coach Norm, what do I do then?"

Take a look at your nutrition. That is where you'll experience 80% of your fat loss or GAIN.

If you are overweight and I asked you how is your nutrition and you said it was great and that you eat healthy, I'd definitely give you the stink eyebrow.

What kind of workouts are you doing and do they align with your current age, fitness level AND goals?

Furthermore, HOW are you performing each exercise? Do you just kind of go through the motions and not getting stronger or more fit? Master your form and technique. This will make a HUGE difference.

Do you make your fitness a DAILY priority or do you allow other things to get in the way some days and you let it slide altogether?

You see, mastering the basics will get you much further than if you tried to take shortcuts.

Do you need Cardio to Burn Fat?

When I first got into fitness, I always heard that to lose weight or get shredded, you need to do cardio.

Top bodybuilders and fitness buffs even swore by it… but the problem was that even though I was doing cardio, I wasn’t seeing the results I was expecting.

All I got was a bit of progress and some sore joints along the way.

Heck, one day I blew out my back on the treadmill LOL.

I still kept cardio in the regimen but it seemed like I was just becoming tired, sore and expending unwanted time on this.

After years of continuing education, ongoing courses, refining, developing and continually evolving in not only my craft, but in my own fitness journey…

…I began to see that cardio was more effective as a vehicle to "health" and not nearly as effective for fat loss.

Crazy enough, once I dropped the “steady state cardio” as a means of burning fat, and turned my attention to what really matters when it comes to fat loss...

I started seeing results!

Abs are not a thing in my family tree so genetics are not in my favour.

Right now, I am 47 and the leanest I have been in some time AND I don’t bust my butt on a treadmill.

So what’s the lesson?

If you want to burn stubborn fat and you find yourself spinning your wheel on the treadmill and not getting results…

Then cardio isn’t your answer to fat loss, right?

"I'm not motivated by what I see on the outside. I'm motivated by what I feel on the inside."

Ironically though, this is what fuels what is seen on the outside.

Do I work out to try and be in insane shape?

No.

In all honesty, I don't work "hard" at all.

Huh?

Man, I have fun with what I do and I don't "let" my fitness own me. I "let" my fitness empower me.

I've been sober for 20 years and never relapsed.

I've been trying to get fit for 14 years and have fallen off more times than I can imagine.

The last "fitness relapse" was a year ago September, where stress was at an all time high for various reasons that will be topics in the future.

Slipped into a deep, dark depression...and kept it to myself.

Because that is what I do. Probably not for everyone.

I will quietly work away at trying to find a solution while walking through the flames.

I believe I must face myself alone to truly see what I'm up against.

I have taken my sobriety for granted for so long because I am so solid with it.

It never occurs to me to reach for the bottle, even in my darkest day.

Bingo.

There are parallels between my sobriety and fitness and that's when I started creating the Lean Beast Blueprint for "myself."

Today, my sobriety and fitness walk hand in hand together.

So grateful 🙏🏻

47 year old me going back in time to reassure little me: "Don't worry kid, I got you."

Ironically, this isn't far from the actual truth.

Sometimes as an adult, I have had to go back and have a heart to heart with the kid in me.

To go back and look at certain experiences that were traumatic, fearful...

And find a way NOW, to help that scared, lonely kid in me who suffered and carried the hurt, to let go and learn to deal with and perceive those experiences from different perspectives to gain other meanings from it so I don't absorb it so deeply and personally on a negative level.

That is where the anchors started to lift for me and I could then begin to see that I am responsible now, and I began to achieve my goals.

Of course I make mistakes along the way, but that's because I'm not afraid to take chances and learn from my mistakes as opportunities to change how I see and do things instead of blaming that what I'm doing isn't working because of X, Y and Z.

I'm not sure that this is a great strategy for most people.

It would only work IF you had the capacity to be honest with YOURSELF.
