✨Did you know children in childcare settings get 1/2 to 2/3’s of their daily nutrient needs in your care!? 🤯.

That’s part of why it’s so important to offer nutritious choices throughout the day.🥪🥙🍎🥛🧀🥦🥕🫐🍓

✨The meals, snack and beverages offered are important in providing them with the nutrients and energy they need.

They’re here! The Food Foundation’s Nutrient graphs! 🥳🤩🎉.

The concept of nutrients found in foods can be a challenging concept for students to understand…until now!

Students will love these colorful graphs that allow them to easily identify the various nutrients in common foods, and allow them to identify which contain more nutrients.

Teachers will love the educator guide and background document on how to use this amazing resource effectively. Don’t forgot to use these with our Food Foundation lesson plans! (Also in our resource area).

Hi I’m Leigh! My tagline?

Everything is better outdoors, including food and eating (and reading, and walking and gardening and socializing…).

I am a Toronto-based dietitian with 15 years’ experience developing, implementing and evaluating nutrition education resources. I love home-made food, and foods that were mainstays of my childhood- even some foods that I didn’t like back then lol (yes, I may have been the poster child for “picky eaters”).

My goal? Supporting nutrition education practices that focus on building food literacy skills and that are food positive and inclusive. That’s how we make learning about food and eating a fun and relatable experience."

Happy Freebie-Friday!

Teaching food labels in grade 5 just got a whole lot easier - and fun too!

Check out our new “What’s on the Label Mabel” resource to have students:
✅ explore ingredient lists and the nutrition facts table
✅ learn how food labels help us better understand food

⚠️Using nutrition labels can be challenging. It involves a focus on nutrients and food comparisons that are often negative and problematic to having a good relationship with food. It also involves nuances and complex concepts that can be hard to unpack – even for adults. Nutrition labelling is in the Ontario curriculum in grade 5, which is early, and so it's important to take an age-appropriate and positive approach.

So we’ve made it easy for your students to learn the key concepts of label reading through this fun and engaging lesson that also aims to support and preserve positive feelings about eating a variety of foods.

Sending a big shout 📣 out to all the teachers who didn’t sign up to teach during this rollercoaster of a year! 🎢

Thank you for constantly:
✅ Reminding students that their noses go UNDER their mask 😷
✅ Asking students to yet again wash their hands 🙌🏻
✅ Asking students to remain distanced when possible
✅ Communicating with parents about changing school and classroom protocol (even when you’re not 100% sure what’s going on)
✅ Changing things up and pivoting from classroom to remote teaching as necessary

Even though it’s been a challenging year you have all done an amazing job!

Hope you can all recharge your batteries 🔋 this weekend and during spring break.

👉K-3 teachers👈 Looking for a fun and simple activity for April?

Celebrate the different tastes in your classroom using our “My favourite recipe” template.

What a great way to acknowledge how we are unique (we all like different foods), but are also the same (we all have favourite foods!).

Our team at Reimagine think this would be great! 👏🏻👏🏻😀

Exploring food and eating without the parameters of it being “healthy”is a wonderful way for students to begin to foster a positive relationship with food and what it does to fuel our bodies.

Using exploration descriptors taste, shape, smell and textures of food are a fantastic alternatives to introduce nutrition concepts to young children without labelling of ✅healthy/❌unhealthy or good/bad.

Exploring food and eating this way is so much fun!

How words would you use to describe a peach?
Juicy? Fuzzy? Sweet? Sour?
