Tongue ties do exist, and a quick peek inside the baby’s mouth or a little swipe with a finger is not an adequate assessment of oral function.

Baby registries often amount to thousands of dollars-and many of the supposedly “must have” products can potentially be harmful to breastfeeding. Many of these items are simply unnecessary, and money could be better spent on the practical and professional supports that are more tangibly useful.

Lots of families whose babies have both a milky white tongue due to restricted movement, are also experiencing the burning pain caused by compression and vasospasm.
It’s important to distinguish between the type of burning sensation caused by thrush and the burning sensation caused by compression. If you type in “white baby tongue” and “burning pain,” Dr. Google is going to tell you it’s yeast overgrowth, but this just highlights how important the trained eye of a lactation consultant is in unpacking the specific details of what’s going on and helping you solve your problem. Sometimes it’s both!

Babies before bottom lines, always.
The marketing of formula, though the methods and messaging has changed over the years, has remained aggressive. The end goal of this billion-dollar industry is that the fewer families who breastfeed, the more families who combo feed, and the more barriers there are in place to successful breastfeeding, the more profit they will make.

It is world breastfeeding week-a time to celebrate breastfeeding (in any amount and in any form) in a world that poses so many barriers, which includes predatory formula marketing.
Formula marketing on social media actively undermines breastfeeding, harms parents, and harms infants. It’s time to take action and call it out.
Remember that calling for the accountability of systems whose primary function is to profit off of breastfeeding “failure,” does not equate negative judgement of the mothers who have needed or chosen to use human milk substitutes. This is about protecting the choice to breastfeed and the right to breastfeed without the influence of exploitive marketing.

It’s been a slow, nourishing kind of summer.
Less online, more outside.
More time noticing—how the garden grows, how quickly childhood moves, how much I needed a quieter rhythm.

I’ve stepped back from social media, but not from the work. I’m still here—supporting mothers, holding space, offering lactation care and gentle guidance. Just in a way that honours the season I’m in, too.

You’re doing enough. You are enough.
