Ok, let’s not focus on all the safety issues in this picture.... yes he’s on his tummy, yes there are pillows and a loose blanket too.... oh and he’s also up on a bed.....

Do you notice anything else!?!? Yup he’s SLEEPING!!!

My first would never just sleep anywhere, and especially not on his own..... I basically ran through our mini bedtime routine, laid him down, and BAM!!!! 10mins later he found his sleep spot and he was out!! And it felt so good!! My mother in law was all like “he’s already sleeping!?!?” I’m not going to lie, it made me feel pretty darn great!

Knowing that my little guy has the skills to literally sleep ANYWHERE feels like a mom win!!

I would like to add that I was just outside the room while he slept so that this paranoid mom could keep a close eye on him

New mothers are often told: “Once you’ve fed, burped, and changed your newborn, you should leave you babe alone to self-soothe if they cry, as you have met all their NEEDS.”

One day, I hope all new mothers will smile confidently and say “I have given birth to a baby, not a digestive system! My baby has a BRAIN that needs to learn TRUST and a HEART that needs to learn LOVE.”

Trust in yourself momma! You will meet all of your babies needs, emotional, mental, and physical. Respond to their cries, as crying is communication, NOT manipulation.
*
**Keep in mind that sometimes you may need to just take a 5 minute break from those cries. So place them some place safe (crib/bassinet), and take a 5 minute breather 😉

Ahhhhh camping!!! It’s Saskatoon berry season and they are delish!!!
So how do I camp and keep a schedule? The truth is, I try, but don’t get overly worked up if things don’t work out..... also, I have very LOW expectations hahaha
And back to that pic of my Mr. Theo, it reminds me of a face that I would see on True Blood 🤣 (where are my Eric Northman fans at 🙋🏼‍♀️).

INTRODUCTIONS:

Hey Moms, time to reintroduce my self! This is me (Kayla) and my family.... (I’m the one in the middle with the baby strapped to my chest 😉). My hubby (Brad) has our toddler on his shoulders, and our first born is the big brown guy at my feet. My father-in-law and his pooch are on the left there too!
*
My boys are Theo (10.5 months) and Ben (2.5 years). Ben is the whole reason why I started this sleep consulting journey..... he was the WORST sleeper, and everything I said I would never do in regards to sleeping I did it.... I was in total survival mode🤦🏼‍♀️. There was no one local to me to help or even talk to.... the nurses at the clinic kept telling me that “it was normal, and it will get better.” Kind and true words, however, they weren’t helpful words. My mental health suffered and I was feeling like a failure as a new mom (everything just snowballed from here)....

This parenting thing is hard, probably the hardest thing I have ever done, and I’ve had some pretty tough roles 😬. I’m just like the rest of the mama’s out there.... I’m just winging it and hoping to God that I don’t raise two little as****es.
*
So here’s the only thing that I do know.... I know SLEEP! Like I really know it!! At the end of the day when we make it to bedtime, I totally feel like I’m crossing that parenting finish line, and they are down for the night! 🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
Know that you are not alone in this mom life and that there are people to help you.... even if you need to chat just to feel listened to ❤️

I always ask the families that I work with to complete a sleep log. This allows me to truly follow what’s going on and see how they and their little are doing. I was completely blown away by how quick this little one caught on and thought I’d share with you ❤️

How long does it take your little one to fall asleep?
If your little one is passing out as soon as their little head hits the mattress that’s a pretty good sign that they are overtired. Being overtired can then lead to a restless night, followed by poor naps the next day.... and then vicious cycle continues.
By a general rule, I like to see them take at least 7-15 minutes to fall asleep. This allows them to find their “sweet spot” before they drift off into their solids night rest 💤

We are all doing the very best we can, and we all do what is best for our littles ❤️
Mom guilt has got to be the hardest part about being a parent. YOU are doing a fantastic job, and YOU are your child’s entire world.
Sleep training isn’t for everyone, but it is for some. Let’s be kind and support all moms who choose to do what’s best for them and best for their family.

“Stop and smell the roses”
Whenever we go to a shop/store and there are flowers, Ben always has to stop to smell them. ALWAYS!! This turns a “quick” trip to the grocery store into an added 30 minute ordeal of smelling EVERY flower and plant. Any walk we go on, he needs to stop and pick almost every “flower” (dandelion) for mom. But you know what.... I love it and wouldn’t change a thing.
Parenting is supposed to be enjoyable. Sure we all have our bad days, and some days are even worse, but the small moments of “enjoying the flowers” makes my heart warm and full.
So if you’re not enjoying it for the most part, take a step back and look at what it is that you’re struggling with. There are SO many resources available to help. Reach out and enjoy parenting.

Bedtime battles = lots of patience

I find my toddler still try’s to test boundaries once and a while, with “just one more book mommy” or “mommy, Ben read to you” or “mommy one more song” and don’t get me wrong I want to and do sometimes, but once I say “no more it’s bedtime” that’s it! I have to be consistent and stick to my decision.

No matter what your neighbour, mother-in-law, or random person in line at the grocery store says, you cannot spoil a child by holding and soothing them. NO CHILD IS EVER SPOILED WITH LOVE.

I have had so many parents tell me that when they discuss their child’s sleep with their physician, that their physician’s rationale for their child’s poor sleep is because they are SPOILED..... this is very inaccurate and unfortunate..... a simple evaluation of your child’s sleep could be the change from bad nights to good nights. It’s a free 15 minute chat, that really could change everything ❤️

NUMBER 11!!

Does your little one wear this number often!?!? Thats right, I’m talking about those two little snot lines that run out their nose 👃

So sickness and sleeping.... now what? In all honesty, stick to your schedule and routine as best as you can. Yes, having a sick little one can mean a few more wakings, but here’s the thing, the only difference when they’re sick is that instead of waiting to see if they can transition cycles on their own, you would go to them right away.

So go in, give medication if needed, suck out the snot, wipe the face, and then back to bed to drift off again ❤️ (this momma is going through this right now with Theo, and I also give a few little soothing love rubs after I lay him back down 🥰)

Thinking your little one may be ready to transition to one nap? Wondering how you will know if they’re ready?

If your child is fighting or unable to take their second nap consistently.

or

Their afternoon nap is beginning to interfere with their ability to fall asleep easily at their regular bedtime which can result in an unfamiliar bedtime battle.

If either of the above have been happening for a couple weeks, then it’s time to make the switch from two naps a day to one.

The great news is that this is going to be a wonderful stretch for you and your babe. They’re about to start taking a 2/3-hour nap right in the middle of the afternoon and you’ll have a big chunk of time to do… anything you want! Get some work done, call a friend, or take a nap of your own!!!

I remember when Judd's mom reached out to me, he had already successfully transitioned to one nap, but that one nap was still interfering with his bedtime, creating a bit of a typical bedtime battle. Judd's solution turned out to be as simple as decreasing the amount of time that he slept for that nap.... I can't believe how big your boys are getting Jamie

Sometimes developmental leaps can throw a spinner in the works

Does this sound familiar: Your little one is doing SO well, but now they are learning to stand/sit and seem to be doing this at bedtime. Now that they are a bit more mobile, bedtime can become a bit confusing for them, I mean if you can sit/stand, that means party time, right?!?!
I see how this would have you drift into old habits and cuddle/feed to sleep, or even just putting them down “drowsy but awake” right? It’s important to not let these leaps interrupt your routine. If they stand/sit, leave them for a few minutes to realize that it is not a game of “mom/dad will come back and lay me down, and then I’ll get back up again.” Sounds like a fun game for them to play with you for HOURS at bedtime hahaha. Remember, their crib is one of the safest places they can be, if they do fall, they really shouldn’t sustain a severe injury.

There are always going to be some forks, potholes, or even detours in the road; but know that you have someone to call upon who knows exactly how to fix it.This is a picture of a sweet little boy named Cole whom I had the pleasure of working with :-) Love how happy he looks in crib

Parenting...... wow, what a ride so far!! We have been blessed with two happy, healthy boys and each day they teach me twice as much as I teach them. 🥰

I knew there would be many firsts, but I am completely blown away by how many “firsts” there are each and every day.

Everyday is a new adventure, and like most parents, we are just flying by the seat of our pants. And let’s face it, some days are better than others.

With all the info out there for parents these days, I think it makes parenting much harder than it needs to be... my advice to you if you are like me and love info, find ONE doctor/blogger/method that you agree with it, and forget all the rest.

and Little Miss. Olivia is seriously the sweetest and cutest, and SO much personality. She challenged us every step of the way. She seriously was one of the most spirited little girls that I have ever met, and can see her doing great things as she gets older.....

Soother, binky, dummie, sou-sou, wubanub, sucky, sooes… this little lifesaver goes by many names.

It's true, it can buy you time to get to your little one's next feeding, help extend a nap, or even make the drive barrable!! But what about the effects on your little ones sleep?

I get asked this question ALL the time... and it's hard to answer as it's a pretty loaded question.

At the end of the day, if you are in survival mode, do what you need to. But my recommendation is to try and limit soother use after 3 months of age to reduce the dependency on that sweet little piece of silicone.

Start by removing it at nights, then naps, and then really use it only for travel.... any questions? Feel free to message me or post below

The best thing about parenting is that we can all do it our own way! Honestly, I’m pretty sure we all just “wing” it and hope to make it to the next day with as little tears as possible.

I feel very honoured when families welcome me into their homes and allow me the privilege of empowering them to succeed with their goals.

Probably my favourite moment is when I get to see past graduates and how far they’ve come. A couple weeks ago at .baby.tradeshow.yql I got to see little Miss Avery and her mom nearly a year after we worked together and she is still sleeping like a dream!

Happy Easter!! What do those sugary treats mean for your sleep?

RESUME WORTHY SWADDLE I know you all can barely contain your excitement for this video. I LOVE to swaddle, and recommend it to all my parents with babies from newborn-12weeks. Babies have this crazy startle reflex where their arms all of a sudden will ‘jerk’ and it will wake them up. For the first few weeks of life it is very common for newborns to wake up frequently to feed/eat, but there is nothing wrong with setting them up with great sleep success right out of the gate (or womb, hahaha). Every healthcare professional has a different opinion, as well as the conflicting research, in regards to the swaddle. So really, at the end of the day, you need to do what works for you and be okay with it.
