Regardless of what brings you initially into therapy, it is important to give yourself credit for taking this brave and courageous first step.

While therapy can be difficult at times, it ultimately has the potential to guide you toward the mental well-being you deserve.

In therapy it’s important for clients to not only talk about their feelings but also to engage with their emotions internally, even if it’s painful.

Research shows that when clients feel strong emotions and reflect on them during sessions, it often leads to better outcomes in therapy.

If you tend to live in your head, analyzing, thinking, making sense of it all, but still struggling to feel better, it might be time to bring your body into the healing process.

For many of us, thinking, analyzing, or ruminating has been a powerful way to stay safe. But sometimes, even when we understand why we feel a certain way… it still won’t shift. That’s because healing isn’t only cognitive. Our bodies carry stories of trauma, shutdown, overwhelm, and they don’t always speak the language of words.

Somatic therapy helps bridge that gap. It’s about learning how to feel safe in your body again, little by little.

If you’re curious about what that could look like, I’d love to connect with you.

Creating emotional safety for others involves fostering an environment of genuine listening and empathy, where individuals feel understood and respected.

In this compassionate form of holding space for another, it’s important to maintain a non-judgmental attitude, so we can encourage open communication, and respect another’s personal boundaries.

Being consistent and reliable helps build trust, while also modelling vulnerability ourselves can inspire others to share their feelings.

“You’re not insecure. You just have a need to feel emotionally safe,” is a nugget from my therapist that I will be holding on to for a very long time. -

Recognizing these patterns is crucial because they often hinder our personal growth, relationships, and overall well-being. Acknowledging behaviors like people-pleasing, avoidance, or seeking validation can lead to greater self-awareness, allowing us to understand our motivations and the impact of our actions on ourselves and others.

Once these patterns are recognized, the next steps include:

1. Self-Reflection: Take time to reflect on why these behaviors occur and how they affect your life.

2. Seek Support: Consider talking to a mental health professional like those here at Serenity Now Wellness who can provide guidance and perspective.

3. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no and prioritize your own needs without feeling guilty.

4. Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness techniques to stay present and manage anxiety, helping you differentiate between genuine intuition and anxious thoughts.

5. Open Communication: Foster honest conversations with others to express your feelings and needs clearly, reducing the likelihood of misunderstandings.

We have all witnessed in ourselves how simple misunderstandings and ineffective expression of feelings can escalate conflicts.

Anger can stem from the triggers listed above and can also include fear or perceived threats, poor communication, and unmet basic needs like hunger or fatigue.

When we feel emotionally or physically endangered, anger can serve as a defense mechanism, prompting aggressive and often, undesirable responses.

If you feel that your temper, or that of a loved one’s, is consistently causing an escalation in conflict and disruption within your relationships, you may benefit from seeking support from a therapist.

Psychologists can help individuals manage anger by providing tools and techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to identify triggers, develop effective communication skills, and implement coping strategies.

Through the introduction of mindfulness and relaxation techniques to enhance emotional regulation and reduce the intensity of angry responses, psychologists are ultimately able to help us foster healthier relationships and further self-awareness.

After a therapy session, it’s common to experience a range of emotions and thoughts.

These responses can vary widely depending on the individual and the nature of the issues being addressed. It’s important to allow yourself to feel whatever arises and to discuss any strong reactions with your therapist in future sessions.

Normal reactions can include:

1. Relief: Many people feel a sense of relief after sharing their thoughts and feelings, even if the topics discussed were difficult.

2. Emotional Release: It’s not uncommon to feel a surge of emotions, such as sadness, anger, or joy, as you process what was discussed.

3. Reflection: You may find yourself thinking deeply about the session, reflecting on insights gained or realizations about your thoughts and behaviors.

4. Fatigue: Engaging in deep emotional work can be tiring, and it’s normal to feel mentally or physically drained afterward.

5. Motivation or Clarity: Some individuals might feel motivated to make changes in their lives or gain clarity on certain issues.

6. Anxiety or Uncertainty: It’s also possible to feel anxious about the topics discussed or uncertain about the path forward.

7. Hopefulness: Positive sessions can lead to feelings of hope or optimism about the future and your ability to cope with challenges.

Shame differs from guilt, in that guilt is the feeling of having done something wrong, while shame is the feeling of being wrong as a person. Guilt can be constructive, leading to positive change, whereas shame often leads to hiding and avoidance.

Well known author and speaker Brené Brown, who is extensive research on the topic of shame, emphasizes that vulnerability is essential to overcoming shame. She says that if we embrace our vulnerabilities, we foster connections and build resilience against shame.

She also highlights that shame thrives in secrecy and silence. So it is by sharing some of our experiences and feelings with others that we can diminish shame, as it fosters connection and understanding.

It is by embracing our imperfections and recognizing that everyone is imperfect, that we can help reduce feelings of shame.

Empathy is also a powerful antidote to shame. When we respond to others’ shame with empathy, we help them feel seen and understood, which can alleviate their feelings of isolation. Thus allowing us to creat “Shame-Resilient Cultures”.

“For those of us with chronic illness or pain, we can get stuck focusing on symptom change as the only measure of progress. If we can begin to shift from this mindset, we can recognize all the other amazing ways we are taking care of our bodies.”

“For some of us, we live with symptoms that won’t change, we don’t know how they will change, or we hope they will change- however, we can often shift into more neutral ways of checking progress- regardless of where our symptoms sit. “

“For many with chronic pain, moving away from being hyper-focussed on symptom improvement can support our brains to feel safer, often leading to less pain.”

“Here are some gentle reflections you can save to remind yourself of the various ways you can measure improvement or progress when living with chronic illness. “ -Tacia , Serenity Now Wellness Registered Provisional Psychologist
