It is estimated that about 1 in 10 women have Endometriosis. It's a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside of the uterus, usually in the pelvic cavity. Some women may have no symptoms, while others can have many, including severe and debilitating pain, abdominal masses, adhesions and infertility.
Western treatment can include medications and/or surgery (laparoscopy) to remove the adhesions or masses that have grown due of the condition. Unfortunately, these growths can often return after a period of time post surgery.
If a woman with the condition is trying to conceive, she is often recommended to attempt trying in the months directly following the laparoscopic surgery. This gives her the best chances of conceiving before adhesions or masses return. The problem with the medications is that while trying to conceive, she is unable to take them.
This is where Traditional Chinese Medicine can be so useful. TCM can help relieve symptoms, slow the progression or recurrence of the disease, as well as improve chances of conception. Treatment is generally more effective when combining acupuncture with Chinese herbs; this can mean weekly or twice weekly acupuncture treatments along with taking a Chinese herbal formula daily. Usually a period of 2-3 months of treatment will show improvements in the condition. After this time, acupuncture treatments can usually be less often, and a herbal formula can be administered periodically to slow the recurrence.
If a woman is wanting to get pregnant, it's often recommended she not attempt to conceive for the first 2-3 months of TCM treatment or until symptoms improve, in order to improve the environment of the reproductive organs before conceiving. This is a time where the TCM practitioner can also help improve the overall health of the patient, as well as address an other imbalances of the yin, blood, qi and yang. Once this is a achieved, a protocol to promote pregnancy at the same time as controlling the endometriosis is given.
