May is Vision Health Month! 20/20 vision does not necessarily mean 20/20 health. A routine eye examination may reveal signs of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disease... just to name a few. The early stages of certain eye diseases, such as macular degeneration and glaucoma, oftentimes do not have any symptoms. ClearView Optometry Clinic would like to stress the importance of routine eye care for people of all ages, regardless if you are not having any problems with your vision.

Vision disorders are a common health problem for children in Canada, experienced by 1 in 4 school-age children. Vision affects every aspect of a child's learning, including reading, writing, participating in classroom activities & sports, and maintaining attention & concentration. Early identification and treatment of vision problems are critical for eye health in children. A comprehensive eye exam is the only way to achieve early diagnosis and prevent years of needless suffering among children who need their vision to learn.

Vision is one of the most important components of learning, with studies showing that 80 percent of what a child learns in school is information that is presented visually. If a child’s vision and eye health is not in top form, neither will their ability to retain, learn and perform certain tasks. While vision based skills are more noticeable in the classroom and at school, they may be apparent in extracurricular activities as well.

ClearView Optometry Clinic would like to emphasize the importance of eye examinations for all children and adolescents.

While most Canadians recognize the importance of sunscreen to prevent sunburns and skin cancer, many are unaware that UV light can cause serious eye damage. In fact, overexposure to UV rays has been linked to a variety of eye problems, such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, eyelid skin cancer, corneal sunburns, and tissue growths on the surface of the eye.

What can you do?

(1) Avoid sources for UV radiation. Don’t stare directly at the sun and be aware of reflections from snow, water, sand and pavement.
(2) Protect your eyes. Wear sunglasses that are 100% UV blocking against both UVA and UVB rays, and are close-fitting with a wrap-around style frame to help keep light out.
(3) Stay informed. Get regular eye exams to monitor eye health, maintain good vision and keep up-to-date on the latest in UV protection.
(4) 10-4. Keep out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest.
(5) Children are at high risk. It’s estimated that 50% of lifetime exposure to UV happens before the age of 18. Keep children younger than six months out of direct sunlight, ensure children of all ages wear sunglasses and sun hats when outside and consider using a canopy or umbrella as a sun-shield when at the beach or in the back yard.
(6) Recognize the symptoms. If you’re experiencing immediate pain, an inflamed cornea, or an aversion to light, see your optometrist right away.

July is Dry Eye Awareness Month! Will dry eye harm my eyes? If dry eye is left untreated, it can be harmful. Excessive dry eye can damage tissue and possibly scar the sensitive corneal tissues of your eye, impairing vision. Dry eye can make contact lens wear more difficult due to increased irritation and greater chance of eye infection. If you have increased dryness or redness that is not relieved by the prescribed treatment, let your optometrist know as soon as possible.

July is Dry Eye Awareness Month! Can dry eye be cured? Dry eye is usually chronic and cannot be cured, but your comfort can be improved and eye health maintained through use of artificial tears. For more severe dry eye, gels and ointments can be used, especially at bedtime. Your optometrist is the best source to advise on the best drops for you. In some cases, small plugs may be inserted in the corner of the eyelids to slow drainage and loss of tears. Treating any underlying systemic disease, or a change of diet to include items such as fish or flax seed oil, can also be helpful at times. New prescription medications are now available to help your body produce more of its own tears.

July is Dry Eye Awareness Month! How is dry eye diagnosed? During the examination, your optometrist will ask you questions about your general health, your use of medications, and your home & work environments to determine any factors which may be causing dry eye symptoms. This information will help your optometrist decide whether to perform additional dry eye testing. The use of a high-powered microscope known as a slit lamp, in conjunction with special dyes, will allow your optometrist to evaluate the quality, the amount, and the distribution of tears to detect signs of dry eyes.

July is Dry Eye Awareness Month! What are the signs/symptoms of dry eye? The common signs and symptoms of dry eye include stinging, gritty, scratchy and uncomfortable eyes, fluctuating vision, and sometimes having a burning feeling or a feeling of something foreign within the eye. Some people experience tearing as a result of dry eye. This is a natural reflex of the eyes to create more tears to comfort the eye in response to dryness.
