March 3 is World Birth Defects Day. Not all birth defects can be prevented, but women can increase their chances of reducing birth defects by adopting healthy behaviors during preconception and during pregnancy. Examples include: eating a healthy diet, taking 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, receiving prenatal care, staying up to date on vaccines, and avoiding alcohol and smoking.
