Before you start a gut reset, you need to know this.

There’s a phase that happens when you first start killing off the bad bacteria in your gut.

It’s called die-off.

And it can feel awful…

Like you’re suddenly coming down with a cold or flu out of nowhere. Sometimes it shows up as a skin rash. Sometimes just bone-deep fatigue.

Here’s why it happens:

When bad bacteria die, they release toxins as they break down. If your body’s detox pathways can’t clear them fast enough, you feel the backlog.

Fasting is a stressor. Period. And your body might be very unhappy with it.

50% of the cells in your body are bacteria.

Not 5%. Not 10%.

HALF.

And most of them live in your gut, and they’re working constantly to run your digestion, your immune system, your mood, your energy.

So when your gut feels off, HALF of you feeling off.

Here’s how I like to picture what’s actually happening in there:

Your small intestine, stretched out flat cell by cell, is the size of a tennis court.

And it’s protected by just ONE single layer of bacteria...like a lawn of grass covering every inch of that court.

When that lawn is healthy and full, nothing gets through that shouldn’t.

But when it’s patchy, when there are gaps, when the wrong bacteria sneak in and take up space...you get w**ds.

And w**ds are exactly why your digestion feels so funky in ways nobody has been able to explain to you.

Weeds just mean the lawn needs some work.

And you can absolutely get from w**d stage to gorgeous green lawn, you just need the right steps in the right order.

You might be unintentionally raising your stress/cortisol levels. But! They’re easy to fix :). Always keep an eye on your sleep, it’s a great way to see how your cortisol is doing.

So, the bacteria make less serotonin. Your mood tanks.

This is why low carb can make you lean and absolutely miserable...and it has nothing to do with willpower.

Low carb diets also spike cortisol in a lot of women, which tanks mood AND sleep even further.

This isn’t about eating donuts. Complex carbs and sugar are not the same thing, and diet culture has spent 30 years pretending they are.

Your brain needs your gut. Your gut needs fibre. Fibre comes from carbs. Simple as that.

Your body literally cannot make progesterone without carbs.

So if you're over 40 and trying to balance your hormones by going low carb…
..you’re making it harder, not easier.

Low carb is a stressor. Period

It raises cortisol.

It wrecks your sleep.

And it starves the gut bacteria that run your immune system and your brain.

Carbs aren't the enemy. Your body is asking for glorious whole food carbs!

(Sweet potatoes anyone???)

Get curious about this...because cutting an entire macronutrient is never the long-term answer your body is looking for.

I see the comments. I know so many of you have been told to cut carbs for EVERYTHING.

Blood sugar? Cut carbs. Gut issues? Cut carbs.

Nope.
