Sleep And The Toddler Years (save this post and keep reading!)

There are some sleep challenges that can pop up at any age and any stage. However, the toddler years are unique and challenging for so many reasons, and these special circumstances tend to spill over into the sleep sphere as well.

If you have a toddler or are approaching this stage with your little one, swipe to find out more about the five top sleep issues you may face in this distinctive stage or read the entire post on our blog on our site.

A lot of toddler sleep issues stem from your little one pushing boundaries and exerting their independence. While both of these are healthy and age appropriate, it can result in a chaotic and frustrating bedtime. It can be really helpful to take a step back and make a plan to get things back on track before you end up in another battle of wills at eight o’clock at night. Plan to set limits, be consistent and follow through so that you set your child up for success. A little planning and patience will go a long way in making bedtime a positive nightly routine again.

The holiday season is upon us and if you have children in tow, you may be feeling anxious about your child’s sleep getting off track.

The magic of the holiday season can also look like a jam-packed calendar, more hours in the car and gatherings with unpredictable end times. You know how much sleep your little one needs, and you may be asking yourself questions like, how will I maintain my baby’s nap schedule, or should keep my child up late on special occasions?

We do have some tips! Here’s how to have fun during the holidays and protect your family’s sleep.

❄️ Prioritize your schedule around your most sleep sensitive child (read more about this on our website)

❄️ Communicate your needs and ask for help

❄️ The 80/20 Rule

Swipe to read more about the second and third suggestions, or read the entire blog post with even more tips at the link in our bio

Maintaining healthy sleep habits as a family during the holiday season means not saying yes or no to everything. Change is inevitable as your family grows. That change may look like everyone gathering at your home this year so your child can sleep in their familiar environment. Change may look like doing a brunch instead of a dinner. Change doesn’t mean you have any less fun during the holidays, it’s just different with small children.

Here are Four Key Sleep Tools From the Good Night Sleep Tool Kit to help your baby sleep through the night!

1️⃣ Create Your Baby’s Sleep Sanctuary

Practice the ABC’s of safe sleep (Alone, on their Back, in their Crib), and create a dark, quiet, and cool sleep environment. Use black out blinds, and a white noise machine to achieve ultimate sleep success.

2️⃣ Make Naps a Priority During Daytime

Work with your baby’s circadian rhythm schedule to encourage healthy sleep. Promoting an age appropriate nap schedule will keep your baby well-rested making bedtime easier and night sleep more restorative.

3️⃣ Introduce a Calming Bedtime Routine

A consistent soothing bedtime routine is a set of activities you practice that helps your baby predict bedtime. Include bath time, stories, cuddles, and gentle talks to your baby’s bedtime routine.

4️⃣ Choose a Sleep Method For Your Family

You must be comfortable with your baby’s sleep plan and the method you choose can help you break associations so that your baby can learn to fall asleep independently. It’s important to do your research and choose a method that both you and your partner support.

I’m currently booking into January 5th and later for new families and my sleep support. Reach out today to learn more

The Only Holiday Sleep Tip Newborn Parents (and All Parents) Need to Know:

‘Tis the season of Holiday stress and when you are a parent of a newborn (0-4 months old) you can also be completely overwhelmed with the normal adjustments and life overhaul that a new baby brings.

This is why the only tip I give you this Holiday season is this is the year you can say no. Simple enough?

Everyone is going to want to see the baby and you may feel the pressures of family and friends to show up to every gathering.

Well this year new parents, you need to pay attention to your own cues not just your baby’s.

As I mentioned before, in the beginning things can feel pretty overwhelming. You’re not working on a lot of sleep, maybe you’re still working on establishing a good feeding relationship, and the last thing you want to do is be thrust into a room full of family and friends, who while they mean well, may do more harm than good.

We also have to factor in that at this age your baby can become over stimulated through the simplest of acts. When first born their nervous system isn’t fully developed so things like getting passed around too much, spoken to too much, even looked at too much can spiral them into overstimulation and then the cycle begins. An over stimulated baby has a harder time falling asleep and then becomes an overtired baby, and well we know how that plays out.

So this is the year you can say no. No, we will not be going to every gathering. No, we don’t want anyone over today. No, I will not be baking your favourite shortbread cookies this year.

Saying ‘no’ is ok!

And parents, if you have older children, this also applies!

What do you think?

Tips For Better Sleep During The Holiday Season:

It’s important to protect your sleep and have a plan in place to try and stay well rested during a very busy time.

However, even when you manage to get yourself to bed at a good time, sometimes what comes next isn’t exactly a restful night sleep. It can be hard to turn your brain off and relax your body, both of which are essential steps for a good night’s sleep.

Do you find yourself influenced by the following holiday pressures?

❄️ Financial Stress.

❄️ Family Pressures.

❄️ Food And Drink.

We’re certainly not saying that all those stresses don’t matter and that you should just let it all go. What we are saying though, is that by being more aware of the stresses the holiday season brings, you can be better prepared and feel more in control over why you’re feeling tired and overwhelmed.

Unfortunately, feeling exhausted only makes you feel more stressed – it’s a vicious circle that can be hard to break.

Here are some of the recommended ways to manage your stresses so you can sleep well before, during and after the holidays:

Carry a notebook during the day where you can make notes of ‘to-do’s’ and keep track of holiday purchases. Feeling confident that you are less likely to forget or duplicate something can ease off some of the holiday stress and help you stick to a budget.

Plan ahead with your friends and family. Disappointing someone at the last minute is stressful. Have discussions around holiday plans well in advance so that everyone knows what to expect and when to expect you.

Be smart about food and drink. Before you overindulge, stop and think about how your choices will make you feel later in the evening when it’s time for sleep.

And of course, practice good sleep hygiene, which means getting the recommended eight hours of sleep a night, and make sure your sleep environment is supporting your sleep needs.

How To Winterize Your Bedroom For Better Sleep:

Do you notice that your sleep habits or sleep patterns change with the seasons? It can be harder to sleep well during the summer due to the heat and humidity, but the colder temperatures can also make it more difficult to get a solid, restful sleep too.

We’ve talked before about the importance of your sleep environment, and so in light of winter being on its way, we’re sharing helpful information on how to get your sleep space ready for winter.

When we’re talking sleep environment, it’s not only what’s happening inside your bedroom that you need to pay attention too, but external factors as well.

In the winter months, the air gets drier and mornings are certainly darker, but by preparing your space properly, these seasonal changes don’t need to affect your sleep quality.

You don’t have to make ALL of these changes - but which one will you try first?
