It can be confusing for parents when trying to decide to follow a clock based schedule or to go by wake windows. Many of the new apps and devices today follow wake windows and this is mainly so they can give a quick input to parents on average ranges for sleep based on baby’s age.

While it’s great to understand your little ones’ wake windows, it can become confusing for some parents to follow them as your day and baby’s sleep is constantly changing.

Why a clock based schedule ?

Around 4 months of age your little one’s sleep becomes more organized and they are ready to do those longer stretches of sleep for naps and night time. It is at this time that we recommend families look at a clock based schedule for babies.

The main reason for this is to provide that predictability to the baby’s body as well as to your own schedule. Our bodies naturally follow a 24 hour clock, which controls changes in the body that help us to sleep. Once babies are over 4 months they start to follow those patterns called circadian rhythms. If we put them to bed when their body is naturally ready for sleep, not only can it help them settle to sleep easier but they are also more likely to get that deep restorative sleep that makes them better rested throughout the day.

Following a clock based schedule also helps to sync baby’s internal clock. Their body will naturally start to know when sleep happens which again will make them more tired and they will then start to show those tired cues at predictable times.

SLEEP TIP // Don’t assume naps are over when your baby wakes up early:⬇️ Read on!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don’t assume the nap is over when your little one wakes after 30-40 minutes. It’s not. Stop. Wait. And listen. Let them practice soothing themselves to sleep first before you go to them. The only guarantee if you go to them right away is that they won’t fall back asleep and they won’t get that restorative sleep they need throughout the day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

➡️ Let’s Re-Think Self-Soothing⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Self-soothing. You’ve read every article you can on it and your head is swimming with the difference of opinions. Most sleep experts will tell you that your child needs to learn how to self-soothe in order to fall asleep on their own. Those who are opposed to sleep training will tell you that self-soothing doesn’t exist and all you are teaching your child is that you have abandoned them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Well what if I told you forget trying teaching your child to self-soothe? Let’s forget that term all together. At the end of the day you aren’t teaching your child to self soothe. Instead you are showing them that they are able of falling asleep themselves.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Capability. THAT is the amazing skill for your child to learn.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They show us the signs, and sometimes pretty early on, but often we mix them up and confuse them. Your little one may suck on their hands or fingers and we automatically assume these are hunger cues, they grimace and groan and we think it’s because they need us to pick them up and help them settle, but that’s not always the case. These are also signs that they are learning to self-regulate and soothe.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Signs that they are ABLE.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They can do it themselves. They can be happy and content in their sleep environment and not need you right away. They can be calm and fall asleep peacefully on their own. We want them to know that we believe they are capable. They can do anything if we allow them the chance to do it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stop teaching your child to self-soothe.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When you are choosing a child care provider, make sure you ask about the sleep schedule. Are naptimes at the same time every day? Do children have assigned cribs / cots / places to sleep? How will the staff handle a fussy child or one who refuses to sleep?

You want to choose a daycare whose sleep philosophy aligns with yours.

If your child is napping at 9:30 am at daycare, are you able to make that work for your family at home?

Consistency is always best in terms of sleep schedules so you want to find a daycare that has a schedule you can emulate on weekends and holidays.

You should also ask about the sleep environment or have them show you. If your child is a champion napper at daycare but refuses to nap at home, try to match the sleep environment of daycare at home with the same CD or a white noise machine.

If your child has a special blanket / lovey / sleep sack that they use for comfort at home, buy a duplicate (or triplicate!) to leave at daycare.

Understand that it’s not the daycare’s responsibility to sleep train your child. If your child has sleep issues, it’s best to sort those out before starting daycare. Remember also that big life transitions, such as daycare can disrupt even the best sleepers’ schedules so make sure your bedtime routine is solid before daycare starts and focus on an earlier bedtime until everyone is adjusted to the new routine.

The sunshine and warmer weather are finally creeping into B.C. ☀️❤️

These longer brighter days can sometimes affect little ones naps, bedtime and early mornings if the room is too warm and bright.

Use black-out blinds/shades! They aren’t just for providing a darkened sleeping space.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As we get into those brighter and warmer days, by keeping these drawn, their dual-purpose is blocking out the sun’s rays. Doing this can favourably impact the temperature in the bedroom by keeping it much cooler.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Before installing/hanging, be sure that you have left a generous overlap of the shades/drapes that extends beyond the upper, side and lower edges of the window. The early morning sun tends to find it’s way into the room otherwise.

I know how critical sleep is for all of us and how frustrating it can be when we aren’t getting it. Often times when families reach out to me they are wanting to start as SOON as possible. I know waiting for support can be hard.

But I promise I am WORTH the wait !!

I have a wait to start new families because of the detailed and custom sleep support I provide. Because of this I only take so many families at once to provide that individualized support which helps you understand the changes we are making and gives you the skills to carry forward those changes with your little ones.

My wait times do vary but the summer is always a busy time for sleep and sleep support. Travelling as a family this summer? You’ll want to read this first and prepare for great sleep, even when away from home.

Our first tip? Remember your bedtime basics:

Maintain a consistent bedtime so your child gets enough sleep to enjoy the next day of your holiday.

If bedtime shifts earlier or later depending on your new location, keep it the same. Your child’s internal clock controls hormones that affect hunger, mood, health and thinking, and it works best with consistency.

When bedtime shifts too much, your child is more likely to have behavioural outbursts and mood issues – it’s like daily jet lag.

Even on holidays, your preschooler still needs 11 to 13 hours of sleep and your school age child needs 10.5 to 12 hours according to the new paediatric guidelines released by the American Association of Sleep Medicine.

Secondly: Manage expectations:

It is guaranteed that at some point on some holiday with your children, you will have a few sleepless nights and a couple of harried family dining experiences. If you know that is a possibility and decide ahead of time that you will make the best of it, your holiday experience will remain positive. Lower your expectations a notch and you won’t be as disappointed in the moment and will go on to have wonderful vacation days.

Be honest: Are you worried about your family’s sleep during the summer? If you are, you aren’t alone.

Tips For Sleeping Well In The Summer ☀️

It’s natural for schedules and routines to shift a bit in the summer months and for families to feel a bit more flexible when it comes to rules and plans.

We always suggest an 80/20 rule when it comes to sleep, as there will certainly be times when staying up later or missing a nap is the reality. And that’s okay!

What we do suggest though, is to do a little bit of planning so that you can quickly get back on track before things go too sideways.
