Research shows that introducing allergenic foods early can actually lower the chances of developing allergies later on! 🙌

You should start the process of introducing your baby to allergens at the beginning of their solids journey, right around 6 months. Ideally, all priority allergens should be introduced before your baby’s first birthday.

For babies at higher risk of developing allergies, there is evidence that introducing top allergens between 4-6 months may be beneficial for allergy prevention.

𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘀:

✅ Start small. Offer your baby a small amount of the allergen (1/4 tsp), then wait 10 minutes while watching them closely for signs of an allergic reaction. If your baby does not show any signs of reaction after 10 minutes, offer them more. Aim to offer about 2tsp total of the allergenic food.

✅ Introduce allergens when your baby is healthy. If your baby is fighting a cold or a flu, it can be easy to mistake symptoms of an allergic reaction for pre-existing
cold and flu symptoms.

✅ Introduce allergens early in the day. Most allergic reactions occur within minutes but can appear up to 2 hours after eating the food. It’s important to be around to closely monitor your baby during this time for any signs of an allergic reaction.

✅ Offer only one new allergen at a time. They should be separated from other allergenic foods that have not yet been ruled out.

Did you know that the average age for starting to introduce solid foods has changed so much in the last 100 years❓It’s no wonder this is a confusing stage for parents!

✳️1800’s - There wasn’t baby food. Babies were fed breastmilk for the first year. In the 1880s, recommendations came out that said not to feed babies until they got teeth and not to serve fruits and veggies until 2 years of age!

✳️1900’s - Industrialization of food began, vitamins were being discovered...and F&V’s were recognized as being beneficial! This shifted to an earlier intro of foods (at 5-6 months of age) and an earlier intro of F&V’s 🥦.

✳️ 1930s - Ge**er took over the market with massive production of jarred baby food and advertising convinced moms & docs that commercialized baby food was not only better nutritionally than homemade baby food - but safer.

✳️1950s - Companies pushed for even earlier intro of food (4-6 weeks!) Baby food was thought to make babies strong, healthy, and better than formula (which many moms at the time were using).

✳️ 1990s - It was discovered that too early intro to solid foods contributed to the displacement of breastmilk/formula, which is now known to be nutritious! It was also recognized that developmental readiness signs were required for solids.

✳️ 2000s - We know now that exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life is ideal, and that there is no benefit to introducing solids earlier (except for high-risk allergy babies). It’s also now recognized that the developmental readiness principles were incomplete in the 80s, and research now supports the intro of solids closer to 6 months of age.

Let’s be honest, there’s actually no perfect list of BEST foods for starting solids!

✅ A VARIETY of whole foods is key. As many (safe and nutritious) foods as you can let your baby experience between 6 to 9 months of age - the better.

That being said, we like to focus on HIGH IRON, OR HIGH CALORIE foods, and ones that are easy for babies to eat/hold. Since your baby won’t be ingesting a whole lot of food in the beginning, we want the bites they do get in to be super nutrient-dense!

“How much should my baby/toddler eat?”⠀
“How much food is too much?”⠀
“I think my baby is eating too little”
“What’s a good amount of food to serve my baby/toddler?”
⠀
The answer...⠀
⠀
Their portion sizes are totally up to them! THEY should be the ones to decide how much to eat meal to meal! 🥦🍓

It will all depend on their hunger levels, their state of growth, their health and their level of interest (or disgust 😝) at each meal. Leave it up to them to decide how much they need at one time. Kids aren’t supposed to be the exact same amount of “hungry” every single meal... that would mean we’d more often than not be overriding their true hunger and fullness cues.⠀

One of the most common questions we get is WHEN to feed babies…how OFTEN to feed them… and how do solid foods fit in with milk feedings???

Here is a little overview of the main points when it comes to progressing through meals & snacks from 6 to 12 months:

➡️ 𝟲-𝟳 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 is all about the first introduction to food and meal times. Start with one meal per day and work your way up to 2 as your baby shows more interest.⠀

➡️ By 𝟴-𝟵 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀, we want baby to be having 2-3 meals per day, ideally 3 meals a day at 9 months. Meals are now a regular part of their day, they’ve got the hang of solids, eating skills have developed, and finger foods have for sure been introduced :)

➡️ By 𝟭𝟬-𝟭𝟭 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀, you can introduce one solid food snack per day as a way to further expose your baby to solids and get more practice & nutrition in. It’s not uncommon for babies to start to naturally decrease the amount of milk they take in at this age and want to eat more food. This is ok! The only time you want to stay away from snacks between meals is if baby isn’t getting at least 16-24 oz. of milk per day.⠀

➡️ At 𝟭𝟮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀, you’ve now got a toddler who is enjoying the same feeding schedule as most of us - 3 meals & 2 snacks per day! Milk will begin to be served with meals as opposed to between meals and needs to decrease to 16 oz/day.
