What’s the SECRET to EMPOWERED birth?

It’s not a specific type of birth - vaginal birth, natural birth, cesarean birth, homebirth, induction, unmedicated birth, epidural birth….those are just labels.

🌟The secret is informed CHOICE.

Have you heard that term before? You’ve probably heard about informed consent. But there is a big difference between informed consent vs. informed choice.

❓Informed CONSENT is when your care provider recommends a plan of care, giving you the reason + the risks. Then you give your consent to follow their recommendation.

The challenge is that sometimes the way care providers frame their recommendations can make you feel like you don’t have a choice.

👏Everything. 👏Is. 👏Always. 👏A. 👏Choice.

✅Informed CHOICE is when your care provider recommends a plan of care, fully discusses the reason for their recommendation, the benefits, risks + any alternative options, without pressure or coercion (intended or not). Then you CHOOSE what option is best for YOU. That might be consenting to the recommendation or that might be declining or choosing to wait.

One of the most essential parts of informed choice is your care provider's complete SUPPORT for whatever option you choose.

✨An EMPOWERED birth is one where you look back at your birth, however your baby was born, + know without a doubt that you were fully informed of all the options, you made the best decisions for you, + that you were supported + respected in making those choices.✨

🏎️Speed Up Your Induction Process with These Pro Tips!

So you’ve been booked for an induction - maybe you’ve gone past your due date by a week or two, maybe you have gestational diabetes, whatever the reason, yay, it’s almost baby time!

We like to warn people that inductions can take a LONG time. Just because you might be booked in on Tuesday, it doesn’t mean you’ll have your baby in your arms that same day. This is because when we are starting labour from scratch, we have to mimic the entire process - meaning everything from cervical ripening (which can take weeks naturally), early labour (which can take days) + active labour + pushing which is on average about 12 hours for first time parents.

If there was a way to potentially shorten that time, wouldn’t you want to try it?! Me too.

Cervical ripening is typically the longest phase of the induction process. The "riper" your cervix is before your induction starts, the less intervention you may need to get your labour started during your induction. 👏

Try these evidence based tips to ripen your cervix if you have some time leading up to your induction:

1. Ni**le Stimulation
2. S*x
3. Acupuncture
4. Chiro
5. Evening Primrose Oil

📌Save this for the end of your pregnancy!

✨Choice of Birth Place - Hospital Birth 🏥✨

In Canada we have the privilege of deciding where & how we will birth our babies. If you are being cared for by a physician you may be able to choose which hospital in your area feels most comfortable to you - based on proximity to your home & amenities provided by the hospital.

If you have a registered midwife as your primary prenatal care provider you may have the option between hospital, home or birthcentre.
________
Let’s talk options:

Benefits of Hospital Birth:
✅ Sense of security with direct access to specialists if needed
✅ Pain relief readily available
✅ Safest for those who are high risk, or have a history of complications in a previous pregnancy or birth

Potential Drawbacks of Hospital Birth:
⚠️ Lack of flexibility in hospital protocols & routine procedures such as eating/drinking in labour, support people allowed, fetal monitoring
⚠️ Feeling “on the clock”
⚠️ Slight higher chance of interventions such as labour augmentation, vacuum, forceps, & cesarean
_______
Things to Consider

Most hospitals these days have beautiful birthing suites, access to tubs or showers for pain relief & lots of other amazing equipment to support normal birth. We suggest making your hospital room as cozy as possible to encourage oxytocin flow. Bring things like a housecoat, slippers, LED candles, an iPod & a labour playlist. Don’t be afraid to turn the lights down low, draw the blinds, move the bed. Press all the buttons (ok maybe not alllll the buttons!) It’s your space - treat it like you would your own home!

What did you love about your hospital birth? What cozy things did you bring?!
