Dr. Kim Gowetor, ND Dr. Kim Gowetor is a licensed and registered Naturopathic Doctor practicing holistic health and medicine in Sherwood Park and Calgary, AB.

She specializes in weight loss, detoxification, hormones, digestive health, stress, burnout and mental health. Naturopathic medicine isn’t just a type of medicine. Nor is it a religion or a thing you must believe in to make it work. It is simply getting back to the roots of what healing used to be, but also blending it with modern scientific advancements to make it an even more powerful approach.

Antibiotic drugs became accessible to the general public in the 1940s. It was at this time that we started to move away from some of the more traditional forms of healing, being optimistic that penicillin would be a cure all. Unfortunately, as antibiotic resistance continues to become more problematic we have learned that we can no longer put all of our eggs in one basket. There needs to be a more holistic approach to health available and it has become necessary to bring back some of the tried and tested methods from yesteryear. Many of the traditional methods used in a Naturopathic Medical practice have been in use for thousands of years with much success. Blending these more traditional roots WITH modern science make it an even more highly effective and powerful form of care. It is a science AND an art that as a preventative and primary care option helps you return to YOU and connect with the deepest, knowing parts of yourself to be able to fundamentally take better, loving care of your SELF without the struggle. Naturopathic Medicine aims to clear the obstacles that are getting in the way of doing that on a transformational level so that you not only improve your health but you also improve your confidence, self-awareness, and your overall quality of life. We use a blend of modalities, such as botanical medicine, homeopathy, nutritional/nutraceutical therapy, acupuncture/traditional Chinese medicine, lifestyle counselling, psychosomatic energetics, mindfulness based therapies, and naturopathic injection therapies to help you achieve the best results from working with us.

This one drives me crazy too…

One of the most common things I hear that drives me CRAZY is the idea that you're going to starve out your candida by avoiding fruit (and that is assuming you.do actually have candida) - and one of my biggest pet peeves is "the list".

You know "the list".

All the things you're not supposed to eat that apparently those pesky bad yeast love to eat and if you don't give them those things they're apparently just going to say 'well...I guess that's it. No more food' And then they become the dead.

Let's talk about this.

Bacteria, yeast and such are not going to willingly give up because you stopped feeding them gummy bears, crackers and bananas. The way that yeast consume nutrients is extremely complex and is not as simple as 'take out sugar & starches, then they die'.

They are wily!

You don't feed bacteria? Some will survive by eating from your mucus layer (the protective layer in the gut); we give antibiotics? Some bacteria will relocate to the crypts and evade your immune system and if you try to starve yeast through the list? They will use your own body's systems that produce glucose (because our body does that ALL THE TIME) and chow down on that. And news flash: candida can live off other nutrients - not just glucose (because that would be very silly of them to only have one nutrient source).

It's great to not eat crappy carbs - I don't want to discourage people from doing that.  But that doesn't mean that following the list led the candida organisms to some sort of lemming like death march out of your body.

According to a recent study: "C. albicans has not only an extraordinary flexibility to utilize a variety of nutrients present in the host but also the ability to manipulate the microniches in order to cause disease and avoid the immune system."

So it's unlikely if you truly have candida (pro tip: a questionnaire or spit test are not a diagnosis) a long term restrictive diet is not a cure. If you think you have candida get tested and properly treated.

When you lack courage, you are inclined to:

1️⃣ lie to yourself and others in order to avoid responsibility for your decisions.

2️⃣ not honor who you are and what you value.

3️⃣ struggle with addiction to things (food, drugs, alcohol, people) as they are a way of escaping unsolved problems.

4️⃣ keep yourself busy instead of seeking to understand and deal with a permanent crappy mood.

Can you relate to any of this? I know I can... it’s so easy to miss the ways in which fear can stop us from being bold and taking that first courageous step toward self-examination and our ability to live our life according to our values.

Courage can help you become your own biggest cheerleader, most compassionate critic, and bestest friend. The more you cultivate these attributes, the more aligned your body, mind, and spirit become...which improves your health tenfold across the board!!! Where has courage helped you take some necessary first steps to improving your health/life? Where has fear held you back? I’d love to know...

We all talk about getting our 10,000 steps in everyday these days but is that really the best number to be shooting for? Read on to find out...

KEY POINTS:

⚠️ 10,000 steps was originally a marketing tool for a pedometer developed in 1965

⚠️ Some studies since have reflected that 10,000 steps/day does improve heart health, mental health, and even lowers diabetes risk.

⚠️ BUT more recent research has shown that even just 4,400 steps a day is enough to lower the risk of death in women significantly. Not sure if that carries over to men.

⚠️ The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. No additional benefits were seen with more steps.

⚠️ Research has shown that people who sat for eight or more hours every day had a 59% increased risk of death than those sitting less than four hours per day.

⚠️ BUT people that did 60-75 minutes per day of moderate-intensity physical activity, seemed to eliminate this increased risk of death.

⚠️ Overall it appears that getting 10,000 steps a day isn’t essential for health benefits – half that target appears to be beneficial.

SO just make sure to move your body on a regular basis, do your best and try not to get too hyper focused on 10,000 steps.

AND most importantly...HAVE FUN!

Most of us know by now that 10,000 steps is recommended everywhere as a target to achieve – and yet where did this number actually come from?

This is from Elizabeth Gilbert...I love how she illustrates that nature will always find its way no matter what our “plans”.

My “Not What I Planned” book will be coming along soon haha

“Dear Ones:

I want to share something beautiful with you today. This is a map of the Mississippi River, created in 1944 by a cartographer named Harold Fisk.

It’s called a “meander map”.

It demonstrates all the various paths that the Mississippi has taken over the millennia. The different colors represent moments in history when the river jumped her banks and changed her course dramatically. Native Americans used to move their settlements along with the river’s constant shifts and changes, but Americans saw things differently. In the 1940s, the Army Corps of Engineers decided to lock down the Mississippi River into a certain course. They built walls and levees and declared: “These are now the official boundaries of the Mississippi. She doesn’t move an inch from HERE.”

Nature, of course, has had different plans.

I’m bringing this up today, because I’ve been thinking lately about the ways that I keep trying to control my own nature. I see the rules and boundaries that I have set for myself over the years, and how often they have failed. I think about the vows I’ve made to myself and others about where I’m going to be next year, or who I am going to be next year. Endless, expensive, stress-inducing efforts to civilize the river of my being.

But if you were to look at the history of my life, it looks a lot like this map right here. This map could be a portrait of my heart’s own journey.

Maybe yours, too.

I often say that, after a certain age, every woman in the world could write a memoir called: NOT WHAT I PLANNED. We change. Life changes. We often feel shame, confusion and anger about about those shifts and pivots. But what if we just trusted the river? She seems to know where she wants to go.

Onward. ❤️LG”
