In a world full of constant distractions and overwhelming to-do lists, it’s easy to lose sight of the present moment. Mindfulness offers a simple yet powerful way to reconnect with yourself and the world around you. Mindfulness can have a profound impact on your mental and emotional well-being.

Why Mindfulness Matters

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment with intention, without judgment. It means observing your thoughts, feelings, and sensations as they arise, without getting caught up in them. While this may sound simple, it’s a powerful way to break free from the cycle of stress and anxiety. By being mindful, you can cultivate a deeper sense of awareness, clarity, and peace.

The beauty of mindfulness is that it’s accessible to anyone, regardless of experience level. It’s not about clearing your mind completely or achieving perfection—it’s about creating space for yourself to simply be.

Practical Tips to Start Practicing Mindfulness

Start with Your Breath:
A simple way to begin is by focusing on your breath. Find a quiet space, sit comfortably, and close your eyes. Breathe naturally and pay attention to the sensation of air entering and leaving your body. When your mind wanders (as it inevitably will), gently bring your focus back to your breath. Just a few minutes each day can help calm your mind and sharpen your focus.

Engage Your Senses:
Mindfulness doesn’t have to be limited to meditation. You can practice being present during everyday activities, like eating, walking, or listening. For instance, when you’re eating, try to notice the textures, colors, and flavors of your food. By engaging your senses, you can reconnect with the moment and create a sense of mindfulness in even the busiest of days.

Be Kind to Yourself: Mindfulness is about accepting whatever arises in the moment without judgment. If your mind drifts, or if you find it hard to stay focused, that’s okay. Be kind to yourself and gently bring your attention back without criticism. The goal is progress, not perfection.

Even the smallest moments of mindfulness can make a big difference in how you experience the world.

We’ve all heard the phrase “fill your cup,” but what does it really mean?

In the context of mental health and self-care, it’s a metaphor for taking the time to nourish and replenish ourselves—because, let’s face it, we can’t pour from an empty cup.

Signs Your Cup Might Be Empty
Before we can fill our cups, it’s important to recognize when they’re running low.

Here are some signs that your cup might be empty:

Feeling constantly drained: If you’re always tired, no matter how much sleep you get, your body and mind could be telling you they need a break.

Difficulty focusing or being productive: When mental fog sets in, it’s often a sign that you’re overloaded.

Increased irritability: Small annoyances can feel overwhelming when you’re running on empty.

Physical symptoms: Headaches, muscle tension, or frequent illness can all be signs that stress is taking a toll.

Loss of motivation: If you’re struggling to find joy in activities you once loved, it could be a sign of burnout.

How to Fill Your Cup: Practical Tips
Filling your cup isn’t a one-time fix—it’s an ongoing process.

Here are some practical ways to restore balance and nurture your mental health:

1. Set Boundaries
Start setting boundaries—whether it’s saying no to extra work, turning down social invitations when you need rest, or simply carving out time in your schedule for self-care.

2. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a great way to reconnect with yourself.

3. Prioritize Rest
We often think of rest as optional, but it’s essential for our well-being. Your mind and body need time to recharge.

4. Engage in Activities That Bring Joy
Doing things that make you happy—whether it’s a hobby, a walk in nature, or spending time with loved ones—can refill your emotional reserves.

5. Get Support
You don’t have to fill your cup alone. Talk to friends, family, or a therapist about what’s going on. Having a support network can help ease the emotional load.

6. Practice Self-Compassion
We’re often our own harshest critics, learning to be kinder to yourself is a key part of self-care. When you make a mistake or feel overwhelmed, practice self-compassion.

If you are a parent, caring for a parent, spouse, or loved one or employed as a caregiver, this post is for you!

Being a caregiver is one of the most selfless and rewarding roles you can take on, but it can also be incredibly taxing on your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. It’s important to acknowledge the weight of caregiving and remember that it’s okay to seek support.

1. Acknowledge Your Stress and Practice Self-Compassion:

Being a caregiver comes with immense challenges, and it's normal to feel overwhelmed. Recognizing that you are stressed is the first step to alleviating it. Caregiving can be a tough job, and feeling stressed doesn't mean you’re failing. Practicing self-compassion helps reduce feelings of guilt and gives you the grace to care for yourself.

2. Practice Daily Self-Care

As a caregiver, it's easy to put your own needs last. However, self-care is essential to your well-being and to being able to care for others.

Rest and Sleep: Aim to get enough rest to recharge both physically and emotionally. A lack of sleep can heighten stress.

Physical Activity: Even a short walk can help reduce stress, improve mood, and increase energy levels.

Nutrition: Eating nourishing, balanced meals can help sustain your energy levels and support your mental clarity.

Mental Health: Set aside time to relax, meditate, or practice mindfulness. Deep breathing and other relaxation techniques can help calm the mind during stressful moments.

3. Seek Professional Support When Needed

While self-care is critical, professional help can provide you with the resources and strategies you need to manage your stress effectively. There’s no shame in reaching out for support when you need it. Talking to a mental health professional can help you navigate the emotional aspects of caregiving, process stress, and cope with feelings of burnout.

You are doing important work, and it’s okay to take a step back to recharge when needed.

The process of becoming a mother is a sacred and complex journey! Not only are we responsible for a new life, but we also undergo huge change.

Society doesn't often recognize the psychological and physiological significance of becoming a mother. Motherhood affects our brains, cognition, our endocrine system, our microbiome, immunity, and sense of self.

There is a term for this phase, and it's called "matrescence."

A nurse psychotherapist strives to offer a holistic, client centered-care approach. Nurses have knowledge of mental health, illness, body systems, and use of medication. We integrate this knowledge to offer a truly holistic experience by looking at the whole picture and treating the mind, body, and spirit.

It is within a nurse’s scope of practice to offer basic counselling services, however, additional training is required to utilize psychosocial intervention. Nurse psychotherapists are trained through further education and experience to provide psychotherapy. This includes integration of psychosocial intervention in therapy to optimize mental wellness.

Nurse psychotherapists are covered by a number of insurance providers, too!

The word "doula" is Greek for servant or helper. Like a birth doula supports the labour and birth process, an End-of-Life Doula supports death and the dying process.

An End-of-Life Doula can leave a hugely positive impact on those at the end of life and their loved one's. There are many different ways a doula can help at the end of life.

A doula can help with planning & preparing for end of life, as well as support loved ones through the dying phase as it unfolds and assists loved ones through early grief.

An End-of-Life Doula is a strong advocate for their client's with the goal of improving the quality of end-of-life care.

One of the ways parents can prepare for breastfeeding is to practice the technique of hand expression and even save some small amounts of colostrum. Colostrum can be given to your baby in the early days if it is needed.

Keep in mind that hand expression takes some practice. There is no need to be concerned if you don’t get any drops of colostrum. That’s okay. Even if you do not get a drop, you are still activating the milk making cells, and this will get milk production off to a great start. Your body will still make colostrum once your baby arrives!

How to hand express resource: https://www.moremilksooner.com/videos

*Speak with your care provider before you start hand expressing to ensure it is safe for you and your baby.

Some reasons you may want to give your baby expressed colostrum:

· babies who are experiencing low blood sugar

· if there is a delay in the mature milk “coming in”

· if your baby is a bit sleepy in the early days after birth and is having trouble breastfeeding effectively

· if your baby has a cleft lip or palate, or other condition that makes breastfeeding difficult, having stored colostrum can be helpful

· this can also be helpful if you and your baby need to be separated for any reason

The Robin's Nest Family Wellness offers FREE colostrum collecting kits!

You can pickup your free kit at:
4 1st Ave SW Unit 1a, Carman, MB
Gardiner Naturopathic Wellness Centre

**Please note:
Pickup is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays only between 9am and 4pm.

Why is it important to take childbirth/ prenatal classes?

Better Health Outcomes:
Studies indicate that expectant parents who participated in childbirth education classes had higher rates of vaginal births and were less likely to experience preterm birth.

Friendship with Other Expecting Families:
Whether this is your first baby or you're expanding your family with subsequent children, having a community of other parents is helpful.

More Satisfying Birth Experience:
Researchers have found that parents who take childbirth education classes feel more confident in their ability to give birth, and they report a high level of rediness for labour and birth.

Improved Communication with You Provider:
Evidence shows that taking childbirth education leads to improved communication with your provider. You're also more likely to share your concerns when you have them.

A Good Start to Breastfeeding:
While lactation is a natural biological process, learning how to feed your baby takes time and practice. Data suggests higher rates of breastfeeding initiation among parents who attend prenatal classes.

Stay tuned for childbirth class dates and times in the coming months!
