It was so disappointing to see the SpaceX/NASA launch scrubbed at the last minute. Why are launches cancelled for weather, even when there are no storms?

Launching spaceships is a tricky business. As we saw with the SpaceX Crewed Dragon launch last week, careful attention is given to the weather, and not just the weather at the launch pad.

Keeping the crew and vehicle safe are of paramount importance. In the space business there are many things we can control, e.g., spacesuit design, which software we use, etc. But there are things we cannot control, like the weather. If there is even a chance of putting someone in danger - it's not a chance anyone is willing to take.

When a vehicle launches, the expectation is for success. Yet we must be ready for off-nominal (NASA speak for bad) situations. If the crew needs to abort sometime during their ascent to space, they must be able to land somewhere. This is why weather away from the launch pad is important too. In the SpaceX case, they will land their capsule under a canopy of parachutes, targeting the Atlantic Ocean as their landing spot. So the weather must be good there too. Swinging beneath a parachute canopy and landing in an Atlantic storm with 20 foot seas, would not be something I’d look forward too.

Years of experience has led NASA to develop the best weather criteria they can. There are check-lists galore for launches, documenting conditions that have to be met in order for the “go” for the lift-off to be given. Wind speeds, cloud cover, rain, lightning in the vicinity of the pad are just some of those conditions.

Why not wait the storm out, you ask? Well, hitting your target in space is also a factor. In the case of the space station, it requires –in the SpaceX case—an instantaneous launch window. In essence, to reach the station’s orbit, that means they must launch when the station flies overhead of the launch pad. When the shuttle launched, there was a bit of leeway, as the shuttle launch system had the capability to steer into the proper orbit a little bit if we didn’t launch at the optimum time. That allowed us a “launch window” of about 8 minutes. The SpaceX system does not have that capability. So delaying a launch for a weather situation is not in the cards.

While the cancellation of the initial launch attempt brought much disappointment everywhere, it was the right thing to do. Quoting fellow astronaut Mike Massimino: “… no one remembers a launch scrub, but everyone remembers a launch disaster.” Prophetic words for sure. And now, the crewed Dragon is safely docked to the space station, and Doug Hurley and Bob Benhken are busy at work in orbit. We've waited to launch U.S. Astronauts, from American soil on an American vehicle since 2011 when the shuttles went silent. We waited a few extra days to keep everything safe. The result? was a roaring success!
