29/07/2025

In Ontario, First Nations women are more likely to be diagnosed with cervical cancer than other Ontario women. Screening is the best thing you can do to find cervical cancer early. Most people aged 25-70 with a cervix who have ever been sexually active should be screened at least every 5 years.

Ontario has a new cervical screening test that is better at helping prevent cervical cancer! This new test replaces the Pap test because it is better at preventing cervical cancer. It checks for types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that can cause cervical cancer.
In our region, people now have the option to swab for HPV themselves in a private room in their providers office. It’s a simple and quick test and no instrument, like a speculum is needed! HPV self-collection is a safe and effective way to screen for cervical cancer. The test looks for high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer.

This new option gives you more control over your health. If you've put off cervical cancer screening, or found Pap tests uncomfortable, HPV self-collection might be right for you.

Contact your local health clinic to learn more, or visit our website: https://www.waha.ca/news/introducing-hpv-self-collection/

Update as of 1:45, there is no change in the current status. Phone lines, including 911 and local health centre numbers, remain unavailable due to the ongoing external service outage.

Reminder: If you need medical assistance, please go in person to your nearest health centre or hospital.

Ambulance units remain stationed outside of the Hospitals and Health centres to support urgent needs.

Please take this time to check in on your neighbours, especially elders, vulnerable individuals, or those who may not be aware of the situation. Ensuring their safety and well-being is important during this disruption.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates as they become available

⚠️ URGENT NOTICE - Cell Service Disruption ⚠️

We are currently experiencing widespread cell service and landline disruptions across the region. This outage is affecting the ability to make or receive phone calls, including calls to 911 and local health centres.

If you require medical assistance:
Please call your local health centre directly if you are able to get through.

If you cannot reach your health centre by phone, please go in person to your nearest health centre or hospital.

Ambulance units will be stationed outside of the Moosonee Health Centre and the Kashachewan Nursing Station to assist with urgent needs on site.

Local Health Centre Landline Numbers:
Moosonee Health Centre: 705-336-2341
Kashechewan Nursing Station: 705-275-4444
Attawapiskat Hospital: 705-997-2150
Fort Albany Hospital: 705-278-3330
Peawanuck Nursing Station: 705-473-2525
Weeneebayko General Hospital: 705-658-4544
We are currently working closely with our system providers to restore phone and emergency dispatch services as quickly as possible.

As a result of this service disruption, WAHA has initiated a Code Grey.

A Code Grey is declared when there is a loss or failure of essential services, such as communications systems. This ensures that staff across all departments are aware of the situation and are following emergency response procedures to maintain patient safety and care.

Our next update will be shared around 1:30 p.m.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to manage this situation.
