Periodontitis is one of the main reasons why adults lose their teeth. It is an inflammation of the bone and soft tissue around your teeth. Without enough bone and soft tissue to hold your teeth in place, your teeth can become loose and fall out. In its early stages, periodontitis is very hard to see. 🦷Celebrating 19 years🦷

19 years ago today Dr. Allan Hynes periodontist opened its doors !!
We would like to thank our patients and referring dental professionals for your continued support over the years.

Dr. Allan Hynes grew up in central Newfoundland. After completing high school in 1984 he attended Memorial University. He graduated dental school from Dalhousie University in 1991.
He then returned to Newfoundland and worked as a General Dentist for the next 9-years. The last three years in St. John’s, he assisted an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in the OR two days a week for surgical experience.
In 2000 he attended a one-year hospital residency at The Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio. The next 3-years he went to Graduate school at the University of Manitoba to receive his Masters degree in Dentistry with a specialty in Periodontics as well as the Fellowship in the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
In 2004 he moved back to St. John’s, NL and set up a speciality practice in Periodontics and Implant dentistry.
In 2016 he incorporated a ND:Yag (Periolase) laser into the practice to perform laser assisted periodontal procedures (ie. LANAP).
His recent dental interest is the treatment of TMJ and sleep apnea. He recently attended a mini-residency (8-days), presented by Dr. Olmos and the TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centers to further his knowledge in this area.

Happy Assistant’s week to two of the best! Kristin and Genna keep your appointments running smoothly before and after you arrive. From ordering supplies to patient care to sterilizing and all the things in between. They help anywhere and everywhere they can and as an added bonus, they are so much fun!! Flossy was scheduled for a full periodontal consultation with Dr. Hynes. During this appointment several measurements were taken on all her teeth including; pocket depths, recession, mobility and more. Next X-rays were taken, after all the information was gathered flossy was diagnosed with periodontal disease.

Dr. Hynes explained that healthy gum tissue has pockets of 2-3mm around the teeth but in Flossy’s case she was experiencing up to 7mm on her back molars. Once pockets reach 5mm the body is unable to naturally flush these areas, bacteria builds up which results in bone and gum loss. In this case root planing (deep cleaning) was required and Flossy would return to complete treatment with one of our wonderful hygienist.
