Just Because She Carries It Well Doesn't Mean It Isn't Heavy

I have been sitting here trying to find the words to pair with this image.... writing them out.... rewriting them. Deleting whole pages and starting over. All that remains is the lump in my throat.

This image was inspired by my life as a woman and a young single mother. I do not want to break down every detail for you. You can find the story, whatever it means to you.

If I say it enough, will the words surround her in a protective force field?

I never would have thought diapers could tell a story but in the preemie world they signify growth. They signify health and absorption of nutrients. They signify how hard Ava has fought and how far she has come.

❤️ 💪🏾 "Sometimes the hardest gift we can give our children is the gift of acknowledging and accepting our own imperfections.

Angelita Lin wrote, “I saw that you were perfect and I loved you. Then I saw that you were not perfect and I loved you even more.”

There is deep truth to that. Our children need to see us being human, being real, being our messy beautiful selves so they know that’s it’s okay for them to be human and real and messy and that it’s all beautiful.

Besides, aren’t we all a little more lovable when we’re softened and velveteen-real than when we try to pretend we’re mistake-proof and sharp-edged perfect?"

💗 “And sometimes we went downhill and it felt easy.

And sometimes we went up hills and it was heavy and hard, and I was sweating and feeling tired.⁣

And when I was sweating and feeling tired, almost resentful about the weight of them, I would stop, pause and breathe.⁣

And sometimes they climbed out, feeling that they didn’t need the sled again, and would walk a little bit more, explore a bit further.⁣

But they always returned to the sled.

And I always kept pulling it.

That is what motherhood is.

We keep pulling the sled of support. Even when they don’t need it, we are there to help them keep going.⁣

And when they do need it, we pull them through. To carry them when they can’t carry themselves, to support them when they’re feeling tired and emotional.”

So Mama, if your sled feels heavy today, pause and take a breath. You are working hard. This job isn’t easy.⁣ You have to keep pulling the sled.

Our Story

Hi! I’m Kate. Thanks for stopping by my page.

I’m a twin mama and a Birth & Postpartum Doula living in Toronto.

I love being silly with my family, drinking green tea and eating yummy veggie food.

I also love seeing new life grown, born, and nurtured.
