Many of us are realizing that this current wave of interest and dare I say, conflict, around gender, is touching something deeper than the question of maleness and femaleness. So what exactly is all the fuss about and is there a perspective that we could take that might shed some light on why it has inflamed and sparked so much interest in current culture?
I have been attempting to round out my awareness of the issues around gender and diversity and sexuality for many years now. I personally have placed myself on many sides of the issues. From dating another woman back in my 20’s to embracing fundamentalist Islam in my 30’s where anything outside of the gender binary and heterosexuality was not tolerated, to studying Somatic S*x Education in Canada and taking courses in LGBTQ+ perspectives in my 40’s.
Personally, where I have landed in my 50’s, is in a monogamous, heterosexual relationship in a rural area of Eastern Canada, where I realize my outlook is coloured by my surroundings and the people in my community now as much as in all my previous iterations and experiences.
Given my own journey and the overarching search for ‘Self’ capital S that I feel has gone along with that, I wonder now whether we are having a collective identity crisis based on a loss of our own sense of ourselves. Even though there has been an explosion of Somatic or body-based workshops and courses and New Age classes on ‘finding your true self’ be it your Alien ancestors or your ‘Tribe’, we still seem to have a sense of loss, an existential emptiness that threatens us from the dark recesses of our psyche.
