Vayus

In yoga, the vayus are the sacred winds of prana, the life force that moves through us in five unique directions.

Prana vayu rises inward and upward, carrying in breath, vitality, and inspiration.

Apana vayu flows downward, rooting us to the earth and helping us release what no longer serves. At the center,

Samana vayu gathers energy into the belly, igniting our inner fire to digest both nourishment and experience.

Udana vayu lifts us upward through the throat and head, guiding our voice, growth, and spirit toward higher realms. And surrounding all, Vyana vayu expands outward, circulating energy through every cell, weaving the whole body into harmony.

When these winds move in balance, we feel grounded yet uplifted, centered yet expansive—alive in the flow of life itself.

If you ever feel like you are drowning in worries, stay with your breath. Follow it all the way in and all the way out. It will hold you safely in the present moment, above the tide of your fears.

We call this pose, bananasana transitioning into a laying spinal twist on my grandsons yoga mat. Be careful trying this at home. Lilly has been practicing this for years LOL. I would like to thank my dear daughter Hannah Perreault for sharing this picture with me.

Namaste 🙏🏼

Lie on one side with knees bent and stacked, head supported by the arm or a pillow. From this position, the hips gently “rock” forward and backward in small, controlled movements. This rocking motion creates a subtle massage through the hip joint, sacrum, and low back, while also encouraging the nervous system to relax.

The movement is not about force or range of motion, but about awareness — tuning in to how the hip feels as it shifts in space. Over time, side-lying hip rocks can improve mobility, ease tightness in the glutes and lower back, and help regulate tension in the pelvis. It is both soothing and grounding, making it an excellent addition to warm-ups, cool-downs, or restorative practices.
