There are numerous practices, like yoga and pilates, which are beneficial for your overall alignment, flexibility, and postural health. But what they don’t tell you about this kind of exercise is that they are most beneficial only if you enter into them with a certain level of awareness about your existing posture and alignment.

Yes, regular practice of yoga CAN positively impact your posture as the spinal muscles become strengthened to support a more upright and erect spine. But it’s important to begin these exercises from a place of correct alignment to ensure you don’t continue to practice compromise movement patterns. This hugely minimizes the effects of the practices and can actually be more hindering than helpful.

It’s no wonder that professional athletes are turning to functional movement exercises and yoga practices in their time outside of official training hours. The general basis for this being that the more awareness and understanding of our own physical bodies we have, the more effective any kind of movement exercises will prove.

You might be surprised to discover that most headaches are tension headaches, and the pain isn’t caused by the head at all, but rather the muscles at the back of the next were it meets the skull.And, you may also be happy to learn that you can help relieve a tension headache by knowing how to massage a specific trigger point.So how do you do this?You want to find the trigger point(s) of your headache and then apply gentle pressure until you feel a light release.To find the trigger points at the base of your skull, first, locate your spine in your neck, and then drag your fingers out until you feel a large band of muscle running along both sides. Then follow the band of muscle to the base of your skull and slowly move your fingers to the outside of the bands of muscle until you feel a small indent between the bands of muscle and the ears. Do you want to reduce fatigue in your everyday life?

Believe it or not, fatigue and even depression can be impacted by poor posture! This is because the flow of energy around the body becomes restricted by misaligned joints and closes off the circulation of blood and energy.

With allergy season always around the corner, a lot of people are starting to stock up on allergy medications, but finding relief from sinus pressure can happen naturally without the side effects of medication. One way that is possible is by self-administering massage.

Here’s how:

1. Place your fingertips above your nose and then rub outward, moving over your browline as you do.

2. Repeat a few times, and then move your fingertips to the bridge of your nose just underneath your eyes, and rub down and outward.

3. Finally, make small circles on your cheekbones using your thumbs, and work your way out toward your ears.

4. Finish by rubbing out circles at the temples.

Massage is no more than a lofty idea for many of us due to tight budgets and schedules, but you don’t have to suffer because of this.

You can release those tight muscles on your own, in the comfort of your own home. All you need is a tennis ball or two to get started. The idea of a tennis ball massage is to use the weight of your body to release knots by applying specific pressure to points of tension. For example, you might lay on the floor with the ball situated under your back to stimulate the muscles of your upper back.

Once you're positioned on the ball and you achieve the right pressure, you simply relax and breathe until the knot releases.

Keep bones and joints healthy by optimizing your postural alignment!

Over time, poor skeletal alignment can result in muscular and joint pain that very often leads to arthritis, scoliosis, osteoporosis, and countless other skeletal issues in older age. The thing with postural alignment is that each body differs considerably, and as such the ‘optimal’ alignment for one body and skeleton will ultimately be extremely different to the ‘optimal’ alignment for another.

Chiropractic professionals help to assess individual needs and your body’s unique postural tendencies - whether it is completely out of alignment or could do with some minuscule adjustments to improve. From here they are able to correctly prescribe a course of movement exercises to ensure your posture is returned to its optimal alignment.
