Nothing better than following a child’s lead in motivating and engaging play. Play is where the magic happens. And I got to pull out the old COVID plexiglass! Ha. There’s really nothing sweeter!

To all the kiddos in the Well Spoken "That Sneaky S" group - we are so incredibly proud of you! Not only have you mastered that /s/ tongue placement, but you did it in such a short period of time. We will miss meeting together on Saturdays......but we are looking forward to seeing some of you at our SUMMER GROUPS and CAMP! We cannot wait for the summer fun!

Over the last year we have so enjoyed being able to offer Let’s Connect a social group for neurodivergent children to express themselves completely while being fully embraced for exactly who they are. It’s been a beautiful thing to watch grow. Well this summer the magic continues with “Staying Connected”. A 4-week social game play group for neurodiverse children with a focus on building and maintaining connection with peers, enjoying the unique expressions that are offered, and learning some pretty awesome game fun along the way.

It’s not looking good for the princess tonight. Those Ogres are definitely hungry and ready for treasure.

One of the things we strive for at Well Spoken is connection over everything else.
This is not how this game is played, nor was it anything I dreamed up, but it was a fantastic opportunity to build sentence structures into a highly motivating activity that was all child led!

Therapy should never be disengaging or a struggle for your child to attend! If it is, a different approach is absolutely necessary.

Be a champion of play, allowing the child to lead, and enjoying the process always. It’s here where the magic of success is found!

Something we’ve wanted to do for a while now while we ourselves were gaining a thorough understanding of the new movement for Stuttering Therapy: Neurodiverse Fluency.
It’s about time and we are thrilled to announce our new stuttering group for the month of July: Stuttering Shift.

Shifting away from the traditional “fix the stuttering” into an awareness of what it means to “embrace the stutter” is a wonderful shift for child and therapist, let alone establishing a connection with other children who are working out their own strategies as well.

Awareness. Education. Counsel. Strategies. Self-Advocacy. Embracing the whole opposed to working on parts. This is exciting!!!!

What your child says is far more important than the way they say it and we are thrilled to support them through this 5 week program this summer.

Well Spoken Speech and Language Services is thrilled to be able to offer our Preschool Speech and Language Group: Say & Play, this summer. Is your child 3 years old, or approaching 3? Do you ever wonder if their speech and language skills are on track for age development milestones? Then this is the group for you!

Every Tuesday throughout the month of July for 5 weeks.

There is this belief out there that just because a child is Autistic they need extensive amounts of therapy! This is just not true.
As a parent the best thing you can do for your child is ask yourself these three questions:

1. What will improve the quality of life for my child across multiple settings?
2. What does my child need assistance with TO improve their quality of life?
3. What are the goals I have for my child and are we as a team able to get there without support?

Therapy is always about improving the quality of life for those in need of support and never about “fixing” a child.

Once you’ve considered these questions THEN seek out neurodivergent affirming speech language and occupational therapy support!

But don’t just think therapy is needed when there is a diagnosis because more often than not what needs to happen is truly a cultural and societal shift!

It was group day and what a fun day it always is - for child and therapist alike! I want to give a huge shout out to our volunteers - they are simply amazing!! Their dependability, care, and the way they choose to invest in something bigger than themselves is truly beyond words.
An extra special thank you to our ECE Taryn who made today’s session even more stellar with the addition of a bubble machine and the finding of the greatest hidden treasure ever - Cariboo!!! Yes because of Taryn Well Spoken now has Cariboo! How exciting.

She asked “Do you want to be an ally to the autistic community?”

To ally yourself with someone or something is to associate, join, or unite. It’s not just speaking or writing in favour of as an advocate would.

Today we encourage each and everyone of you to become allies - to walk alongside, even in the trenches when needed, the Autistic voice to bring about change! LISTEN to the autistic voice, CELEBRATE the differences and always PRESUME COMPETENCE.

Thank you Cari Ebert Seminars for this post today and for being an ally always to the Autistic community.

Today, we celebrate World Autism Acceptance Day! 🌎♾️

Today can we just focus on embracing neurodiveristy, which means recognizing and valuing the strengths and perspectives of our Autistic friends. We don’t need awareness - the world is a quite aware of differing neurotypes - what is needed is for all people to embrace the uniqueness of the human mind and to move to acceptance, respect, love, inclusion not just April 2 but always!
