Today I received among the most beautiful affirming feedback I have ever received about my yoga classes.

A new-to-me but clearly very experienced student told me after class that they had practiced yoga in India, and that what I offered reminded them of being back there. They described my class as “the OG yoga.”

All of my classes include meditation, pranayama (breathwork), mantra (chanting in Sanskrit), and asana (physical postures). I think I lose students because of that. Many seem to only want asana, and to have a Western-style fitness class sanitized of spirituality or meaning. At this point in my journey, I don’t feel willing to compromise on that. I do emphasize that every component of class is optional, and I offer some alternatives, but I am not willing to remove the components entirely.

It is very important to me that what I offer is as authentic and intact as I know how. For two reasons:

1) Respect. As a white person who teaches other people a practice that is not from my own heritage, and who even gets paid to share these teachings, it is very important to me to honour the traditions intact and not to misappropriate, abuse, or misrepresent someone else’s culture and spirituality.

2) Potency. A watered-down, whitewashed practice simply does not offer the same effects as the full practice. Just as the person who is always wanting to rush ahead to the next movement without pausing to observe sensations or to ground and prepare and move slowly into the movement with stable control, just as they continue to wrestle a scattered mind and sore unsteady joints - if we want to see the benefits, we need to do the practice in a way that actually offers those benefits.

I don’t offer fitness classes. I offer yoga. And it made my heart absolutely sing when that was recognized today by someone who knows it when they see it.

Big news! In light (see what I did there?) of the seasonal shift, all yoga classes now welcome drop-ins!

Pre-registering for a bundle of classes continues to be an option, and doing so supports the sustainability of these offerings 🙏🏼 For those who need more flexibility, you can now drop in and pay as you go in all classes. RSVP encouraged and helpful (text 778-587-8894).
