Wholistic Wellbeing: Expanding Our Perspective
When we think about wellbeing, it’s easy to focus on the areas where we’re struggling. Challenges—whether physical, emotional, or mental—can feel all-consuming when they take center stage in our awareness. But what happens when we widen our perspective?
Wholistic wellbeing invites us to consider all dimensions of our life—physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, and beyond. When we focus only on what’s difficult, we may feel overwhelmed or stuck. Yet, if we intentionally shift our attention, we might notice sources of support that were previously outside our view.
Think of your attention like a flashlight. If it shines only on distress, that may be all you see. But if you widen the beam, you might notice areas where you feel connected, resourced, or capable. For example, when dealing with physical pain or illness, it’s natural to focus on the body’s challenges. However, stepping back to recognize the support available in other areas—such as strong social connections, a calming environment, or moments of joy—can offer a broader foundation for resilience.
Where we place our attention matters. Expanding our awareness doesn’t mean ignoring difficulties—it means seeing the whole picture, including the strengths and resources that can support us through them.
I’ve attached a video for you to explore this idea further, along with some information about the 8 dimensions of wellness.
