I have been in the rehab field for the better half of a decade. During that time, I have treated high level athletes with groin pain. I have also published research articles on groin pain in hockey players. In fact, I have invested so many hours into mastering my craft that I have been fortunate [.....

Hip pain is a common occurrence in hockey players. And it might actually be making players slower. If you’re working with players dealing with hip or groin pain from FAI, you’ll want to keep reading. FAI can change how people move, some of it is compensation to avoid pain and some is a result of...

I recently read an article (read it here) by Chris Bishop on asymmetry in Sportsmith. I thought he did a great job summarizing the research on asymmetry testing. I often get asked about hip and groin strength testing. Things like how much asymmetry is acceptable, when do you intervene and what do I....

Skating mechanics often get blamed for the development of FAI in hockey players Most blame the flexion and internal rotation of the femur during stride recovery. This combined hip motion is thought to lead to repetitive bony contact of the femur and the hip joint. Cam morphologies, thought to a prec...

I hear from a lot of therapist who feel lost when it comes to late stage hip rehab with hockey players. I can’t blame them! Post-op hip rehab is a relatively new area (since the early 2000’s) and it’s not very well understood. But, players who only do band exercises are probably not going to [...

As rehab and performance professionals, we are in the field of creating change. However, we often don’t think ahead enough to consider what impact change will have. Our ability to think ahead is what makes us humans such a brilliant species compared to others. I often see practitioners and other p...

I see a lot of young athletes and their parents fully commit to the process of becoming an elite athlete at a young age. But, in my opinion, they’re going about this all wrong. There is a common belief to improving athletic performance that “more is better”. More on-ice sessions, more power sk...

The quest for individual speed has become a primary focus for hockey players and coaches. Top-speed may not be as beneficial as most think. The paradox of speed tells us that faster isn’t always better. Since the 2005 player lock-out, there has been a movement towards a high-paced game. This shift...

There’s a lot of focus on strengthening the adductors in hockey players to reduce the risk of injury, yet we continue to see high rates of groin pain in hockey players.

Is groin strength a major factor in groin pain?

Is FAIS surgery the beginning of the end for hockey players? Or are we missing a big piece of rehab?

Only 28% of high-level hockey players played >85% of the number of games in the first season after FAIS surgery than they did prior to symptoms. The reason for missing games after surgery wasn’t included, so what do you think it is? Is FAIS surgery the end of the road or is there hope to increase that number to help players return to performing at a high level?
